Job Summary

The Microscopy Core, as part of the Medical School's Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF) within the Office of Research, provides centralized access & expertise and major imaging instrumentation to investigators at the University of Michigan. The facility is currently comprised of three locations and houses major light microscopes, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and the infrastructure for light and electron microscopy sample preparations.

Responsibilities*

Prepare diverse biological samples for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), at times according to unfamiliar protocols (fixation through staining).  Use vacuum evaporator, sputter coater and other specialized electron microscopy sample preparation equipment. 

Section semi-thin and ultra-thin resin sections with an ultramicrotome. Perform staff-assisted SEM and TEM. Train users on operation of SEM and TEM. 

Ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals. Responsible for up-keep of electron microscopy sample preparation area. 

Participate with experienced EM staff in consulting with users regarding EM projects
 

Assist in obtaining EM supplies, including interfacing with vendors to obtain quotes and negotiate packages. Participate in professional development opportunities to build skill set and improve the services offered to users.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's of Science degree with 1-3 years of experience with cell and tissue sample fixation in preparation for biological testing methods.
  • Some knowledge and/or experience in using scanning and transmission electron microscopes.  
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ability to work in a diverse customer based fee-for-service environment.
  • The applicant should be detail oriented, show a willingness to learn new skills, and work both independently and as a team player.
  • Applicant should be interested in building their skills towards advanced techniques in the electron microscopy field.

Desired Qualifications*

M.S. in a biological science with electron microscopy experience.  Experience in working with epoxy and acrylic resins for embedding and sectioning.  Performing electron microscopy in a project during their undergraduate/graduate degree programs. Persons experienced with histology preparation techniques or certification as a HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) are encouraged to apply.
