Job Summary

This position is for an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) for the Pain and Opioid Taper Clinic- Burlington Building
This clinician will work in collaboration with physicians in the Department of Neurology and the Department of Anesthesiology.

We are looking for an experienced and passionate Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to evaluate and treat patients with chronic pain and opioid use, identify candidates for interventional pain management procedures, and provide chronic medication management. The primary role would be for an APP to function independently with a focus on the patient population with opioid/sedative use and have the skills to evaluate for substance use disorder and be able to detox patients off these medications as part of an opioid taper clinic. Experience with prescribing buprenorphine, other opioids, sedative alternatives and opioid antagonists is strongly desired. The qualified APP would also work as part of a Transitional Pain Service where patients with chronic pain and/or opioid use coming for surgery would be managed for both preop and postop stabilization of their pain medications. The APP would evaluate and treat patients as part of the opioid taper program as well as work with the Pain faculty and other resources on site to arrive at a comprehensive plan for patients when needed.  In addition, as part of the direct care of the patients seen at the Back and Pain Center the APP would also be responsible for interpreting lab results, reviewing INSPECT / PDMP reports, ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines, care coordination, and will participate in Quality Assurance.

This clinician would provide clinical leadership in practice, staff development and support the research mission. They will also participate in student, physician, and staff education and support ongoing quality improvement initiatives. 
Candidate would be expected to work with clinical staff for scheduling and triage issues as well as supporting clinic nurses in the provision of patient care as needed with the service

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications (NP):

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current DEA registration required

Required Qualifications (PA):

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required  
  • Current DEA registration required

Required Qualifications (NP and PA):

  • 1 year of opioid tapering experience as NP or PA in an outpatient clinic setting
  • 3 years within the last 5 years of ambulatory care experience
  • Active DEA-X Waiver to prescribe Buprenorphine/Suboxone
  • 1 year experience with addiction management
  • 1 year experience in a pain clinic focusing on medication management
