Who We Are

At the University of Michigan, Utilities is a division of Facilities & Operations, made up of 135 dedicated employees responsible for providing utilities services for the university 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Services include campus-wide utilities purchasing, generation, and distribution, as well as metering and billing energy consumption for all university buildings. Distribution includes the operations and maintenance of 300 miles of underground utility systems from outdoor lighting and high voltage circuits to water mains to tunnel piping. The division also provides a wide range of engineering services primarily dedicated to energy management, the operations and maintenance of university facilities, and the utilities infrastructure.

  • Perform complex electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of a campus style multi service point electrical high voltage (2400 volts and above) distribution system equipment and cables.
  • Perform repair and maintenance work on energized high voltage circuits, including the removal of fuses, links, and buss connections. Install high voltage controls, meter relays and circuit-breakers. Splice and terminate a variety of high voltage primary cables, such as EPR, PLIC.
  • Dismantle and repair primary electrical equipment, replace sectionalizing box pot-heads, links and blown fuses. Test high voltage electrical circuits using electrical measuring instruments, such as DC high pots, mega ohmmeters (meggers) and fault locators.
  • Analyze functions of primary high voltage electrical equipment, using ammeter, voltmeter, ohmeter, drawings, visual inspection, meggers, high potting equipment and secondary injection testing equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance activities, including periodic visual inspections and the testing of switches, over current tripping devices, primary fused or non-fused disconnects and fixed mounted and draw out air circuit breakers.
  • Pull high voltage cable through conduit, tray or ducts by means of power pullers or feeders. Inspect new high voltage primary electrical installations for compliance with applicable state, local codes and University of Michigan guidelines. 
  • Write complex switching orders to enable scheduled or unscheduled orderly building power shut downs following required MIOSHA and NFPA electrical safety work practices.
  • Manage and update computer based High Voltage Distribution Management Systems including electronic operational one line diagrams.
  • Cut, thread and route primary conduit and underground duct systems. Install control and distribution apparatus, including switches, relays and circuit breaker panels. Connect wiring to electrical fixtures and power equipment.
  • Cut, thread, bind and route conduit and pull wire through conduit by means of fish tape. Analyze malfunctions of electrical equipment and test continuity of electrical circuits installed or of repaired equipment.
  • Sketch, read and interpret blueprints, one-line diagrams, cable route maps, circuit diagrams and job specifications. Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.
  • Perform regular monthly inspections of building substations and important ancillary equipment.
  • Periodically serve as lead man assisting Primary Systems Foreman coordinating: PM planning, Primary Distribution operational duties and new construction activities.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school graduate.
  • A State of Michigan Journeyman Electrical License or higher.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must have or have the ability to obtain an MDOT medical examiners card for operating a vehicle or a combination of a truck and trailer in excess of 10,000GVW.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in the repair and installation of primary electrical systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical safe work practices and the National Electrical Code.
  • Reasonable manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude. 
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blue prints, sketches, system maps and diagrams.
  • Basic computer and software knowledge and experience.
  • Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in the classification that includes ascending/descending ladders, positioning self on ladders and scaffolding to perform duties, and the operation of power aerial lifts and other power equipment. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Completion of an accredited electrical apprenticeship program.
  • Hold specialized training certifications.
  • Proven years of experience performing electrical operations work, including; splicing and terminations of high voltage cable and experience performing high and low voltage breaker maintenance and testing.
  • Experience using power quality monitoring test equipment, interpretation of results and suggest remedies to correct deficiencies.
  • Considerable knowledge of the maintenance requirements of primary electrical distribution equipment and demonstrated ability to troubleshoot system devices as necessary.
