Job Summary

This position provides support, information, and advocacy to students, staff, faculty at the University of Michigan who have experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment, interpersonal violence, stalking, harassment, and other forms of sexual misconduct. This includes crisis counseling, information, referrals, and support to students, staff, faculty, and others affiliated with the University. 

Responsibilities*

Direct Client Care and Case Management (60%):

1.  Provide crisis counseling, comprehensive case management, and advocacy for those who have experienced sexual violence. 

2.  Conduct a needs assessment with each client. 

3.  Consider and address multicultural, religious, ethical, developmental, psychological, identity orientation, and other significant variables that may impact the situation.

4.  Provide continuity of care as clients seek out more long-term support services.

5.  Facilitate academic notification of critical incidents on behalf of students to faculty, graduate student instructors, and other supporters as necessary.

6.  Utilize effective communication to guide and support students, staff, faculty, and parents, as necessary, in navigating the sexual misconduct policies procedures, and resources. 

7.  Coordinate appropriate, comprehensive and effective intervention and communication between multiple university offices, academic units, health care providers, and community resources to meet student health, academic, financial, housing, social, and other needs.  This includes assisting with requesting Protective Orders.

8.  Assess client suicidality and intimate partner violence lethality.  When further assistance is needed in these areas, case managers will develop concrete safety plans with these clients and make necessary referrals.

9.   Keep accurate records for each client through Titanium client services software. 

10.  Manage highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion and good judgement to maintain confidentiality in compliance with all applicable laws (i.e. Title IX, VAWA, FERPA, and relevant state laws).

11.  Provide consultation and academic advocacy support to interns as needed.

Hospital Outreach and Crisis Intervention (15%):

1.  Serve as SAPAC on call to attend to client emergencies and after-hours consultation with ProtoCall, our crisis line contractor.

2.  Serve as SAPAC on call to area hospitals to support University of Michigan affiliates who are receiving assistance immediately after a sexual assault occurs as part of the community Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). 

3.  As SAPAC on call, provide crisis response, emotional support, and trauma-informed care. 

4.  As part of SAPAC on call and outreach services, provide information and options regarding reporting to law enforcement and campus officials.  

5.  Facilitate follow-up care for survivors after receiving hospital treatment.

Additional Areas of Responsibility (25%):

1.  Provide consultation and training to campus partners and community members on best practices about working with survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, and sexual harassment.

2.  Coordinate or provide assistance with SAPAC survivor support initiatives.  This may involve student employee or volunteer supervision as needed. 

3.  Provide training and consultation for SAPAC volunteers, including providing specialized knowledge for survivor support initiatives.

4.  Participate in Student Life or University of Michigan committees or initiatives that support the mission of SAPAC.   

5.  May supervise student employees or volunteers as needed. 

6.   Attend weekly meetings with the SAPAC staff.

7.  Attend regular individual meetings with direct supervisor.

8.  Assist and support SAPAC trainings and special events.

9.  Assist the Assistant Director for Survivor Care with weekly, monthly, and yearly statistical reporting, as needed.

10.  Manage other assigned tasks, such as evaluation of client services and resource development.

11.  Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree
  • A minimum of two years experience in providing direct client or student service, support, and/or advocacy

Desired Qualifications*

  •  Master’s degree in related field, such as Social Work, Counseling, or Higher Education
  •  Minimum of one years’ experience in providing crisis intervention and/or advocacy to survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, and stalking on college campuses
  •  Knowledge of college/university policies and protocols related to sexual misconduct, intimate partner violence, and stalking
  •  Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, and stalking on college campuses
  • Specialized knowledge of the criminal justice, medical systems, and emerging best practices in trauma-informed care and experience in advocating for survivors within these systems
  • Ability to speak multiple language capability preferred, but not required
  • Experience in on-site crisis intervention in hospital and law enforcement settings and in delivering crisis intervention and advocacy through an on-call telephone service

Working conditions

  • This position requires that the candidate be able to fulfill rotating 24 hour Crisis Line responsibilities, typically every third weekend, and one or two holidays a year.
  • This position may also require regular evening and weekend hours. 

Additional Information:

This position will also receive on-call pay for time spent on the crisis line outside of regular business hours and for assigned holidays.

If applicant is a social worker with an LLMSW, licensure supervision will be provided as part of this position.

Physical requirements

  •  Ability to respond to outreach calls to Ann Arbor hospitals within 30 minutes

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

Relocation will not be offered for this position.
