Technical Business Analysts work as liaisons among customers to elicit, analyze, communicate and validate requirements for changes to business processes and information systems. The Technical Business Analyst manages technical design work and often participates in the development and configuration of applications while understanding business problems and opportunities in the context of the requirements.  They recommend solutions that enable the business to achieve its goals. The work may be application - or customer-centric. Technical Senior Business Analysts work on complex applications and with multiple customers.

  • Under general direction, formulates and defines systems scope and objectives based on both user needs and a good understanding of applicable business systems and industry requirements.
  • Devises or modifies procedures to solve complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, and form of desired results.
  • Includes analysis of business and user needs, documentation of requirements, and translation into proper system requirement specifications.
  • Guides and advises less-experienced Business Systems Analysts.
  • Competent to work at the highest technical level of most phases of systems analysis while considering the business implications of the application of technology to the current and future business environment. Employees in this classification typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.
  • Utilize product management methodology, technology standards and adhere to performance metrics
  • Define, develop, and document product vision, inclusive of use cases, solutions, testing scenarios, information assurance, failure-mode effects analysis and all other required documentation to ensure the richness of on-going solutions support.
  • Install, upgrade, maintain systems to ensure appropriate lifecycle management
  • Technically responsible for the 24/7 operational efficiency of defined systems
  • Engage efficiently in incident resolution following defined ITIL standards
  • Focus on efficient and secure technical solutions that are driven by the desire to meet overall Michigan Medicine strategy
  • Provide on-call application support


Customer and Application Knowledge

  • Gain perspective of the needs and environment of customers, users, and stakeholders including business vision and drivers
  • Develop, define, and ensure currency of activity roadmaps in concert with business stakeholders
  • Identify and understand the business problems and opportunities through current state processes, work flow and business applications analysis
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the customer, vendor, and other resources and document the most suitable method to achieve specific goals
  • Maintain understanding of existing customer application functionality and interfaces

Requirements Analysis and Documentation

  • Gather requirements through brainstorming, document analysis, focus groups, interface analysis, interviews, observations, prototyping, requirements workshops, reverse engineering, and/or surveys/questionnaires
  • Document the preliminary scope of the project, including goals, objectives, deliverables, stakeholders, team members, high-level schedule and budget, risks, constraints, and assumptions
  • Assist with project authorization activities, including funding approval
  • Develop requirements package to refine the problem boundary and scope definition including business requirement, attributes, priorities, assumptions, constraints, and feature list
  • Analyze user requirements, technical requirements, functional and non-functional requirements, including but not limited to environmental, interface, operational, performance, quality, and training requirements and ensure the solution meets privacy, safety, security, and compliance requirements
  • Present requirements to customers and obtain signoff

Project Support

  • Engage stakeholders and display transparency through Demand and project process governance to ensure appropriate prioritization of work
  • Assist the project manager or provide project management with development of the project management plan, including the request for proposal process
  • Hold responsibility for on-going technical support of product by ensuring appropriate upgrades of application and servers to ensure sustainability during the lifetime of the product
  • Attend/Facilitate project kick-off meetings and other identified project meetings
  • Work with the project manager, technical resources, and/or contractors to map out the design plan, resolve which processes will be automated, and determine how the end-users will interact with the end product
  • Verify that functional and non-functional requirements are being met
  • Develop or validate test plan
  • Work with customers during system testing and manage defect tracking process
  • Develop system documentation and training materials and train users, if applicable
  • Work independently or with the project manager to obtain formal acceptance of the new application and make sure that the end-users achieve the business benefits of the new system

Customer / Application Support

  • Coordinate the creation and monitoring of service level agreements for new product(s) with customer, vendor, and Health Information Technology & Services support groups
  • Ensure service meets agreed-upon levels
  • Coordinate the successful execution of application / system upgrades
  • Manage medium and large application enhancements

Required Qualifications*

Requirements for Senior Position: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, Health Care Administration, or a relevant business area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5 or more years’ experience eliciting and documenting requirements, including business requirements, functional requirements & technical requirements.
  • 5 or more years’ experience developing and supporting software applications

Requirements for Intermediate Position: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, Health Care Administration, or a relevant business area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-3 years’ experience eliciting and documenting requirements, including business requirements, functional requirements & technical requirements.
  • 2-3 years’ experience developing and supporting software applications

Background Screening
