Job Summary

The School of Information (UMSI) is a progressive, interdisciplinary professional school offering a Bachelor of Science in Information, a Master of Science in Information, a Master of Health Informatics, Master of Applied Data Science and a Ph.D. Our mission is to create and share knowledge so that people will use information – with technology – to build a better world.

The Media Content Assistant helps our videographer, multimedia designer and social media producers to create photo, video, design and social content to promote the school and recruit new students. This position reports to the UMSI Director of Marketing and Communications.

Responsibilities*

This position’s duties will include:

Photo/video assistance, shooting, recording and production:

For simple photo shoots (e.g., taking head shots after the backdrop and camera have been set up and lighting prepared, candid shots at events for social media posts, etc.) and video shoots (e.g. recording a faculty talk from start to finish), this employee will work alone to complete the task, sometimes after being coached, assisted or directed by the UMSI videographer.

For complicated shoots where more than one camera is required, the person in this position will operate one of the cameras as directed. For shoots that require dynamic lighting changes, the use of reflectors or gels, etc., this person will assist the UMSI videographer on location while recording occurs to set up and handle equipment and/or conduct the shoot. They may also be asked to upload video from storage media, perform simple edits and the like.

The person in this position will also perform basic video editing, working with their own recordings and other video, including user-generated content, to make it consistent with our branded messaging and to meet the organization’s video standards. 

As the technology changes, part of this job requires learning about/staying abreast of those shifts, and working as part of a team to adapt to those. We welcome suggestions for new ideas, new technologies and new approaches!

Motion graphic assistance, creating and editing: 

This person will produce motion graphic assets via software such as Adobe After Effects, for use as standalone elements and as components of work produced collaboratively within our team.

Assist with design/text updates, posting, and simple new designs: 

The media content assistant will assist our team by:

  • Using pre-designed templates or guides, insert text, photos, videos and images/animations via software such as Adobe InDesign and Acrobat, and Canva.

  • Distribute / post graphics and communications pieces as requested on display screens and other locations;

  • Assist in asset management by tagging images; storing images, video, animations or other assets in the correct locations; retrieving or updating those assets, etc., in our selected digital asset management systems (currently undergoing evaluation);

  • Perform simple image edits/manipulation using Adobe Photoshop.

  • Assist with arranging and executing student takeovers and other social content projects.This will involve working with our social media accounts directly and/or using third-party services such as Sprout.

Other related responsibilities as assigned: 

  • Assist with media equipment transportation, setup, breakdown, organization and storage.

  • Help the videographer to maintain an inventory of photo, video and multimedia equipment, including where that equipment is stored. Retrieve equipment as needed for shoots or social events, repacking and securing that equipment when the event is complete.

  • Other duties related to photo, video, social and multimedia design tasks.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • A minimum of two years of experience in a marketing, communications, or similar professional or university/nonprofit office environment.

  • Demonstrated experience shooting quality photography/videography for a professional or nonprofit setting.

  • Experience creating motion graphics.

  • Experience creating high quality graphic designs for a professional or nonprofit setting;

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technology;

  • Excellent spelling, grammar and proofreading skills;

  • The ability to effectively communicate clearly, promptly and succinctly via email, text, and in person;

  • Strong attention to detail, including organization of competing requests, video framing, type alignment and spacing;

  • Must be reliable and responsible;

  • Ability to work in open, collaborative space and ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment;

  • Ability to effectively manage change and uncertainty;

  • Must be able to provide links or examples of professional work (photo, video, motion graphics).

Desired Qualifications*

  • Associates degree or certificate in a related field;

  • Experience working in an academic environment;

  • Professional experience creating materials in Adobe Creative Cloud, including Premiere,After Effects, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator;

  • Experience working as part of a larger marketing and communications or journalistic team;

  • Experience using ticketing or other help-request management systems, especially Jira;

  • Experience designing and posting basic items for the web, email and social media in a professional setting.

Work Schedule

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. This position will occasionally require work after hours or on weekends.

Work Locations

Will require travel to various locations on and off campus. This position may be all or partially remote during the pandemic, at the employer's discretion and with the employer's option to extend according to UMSI guidelines. Once safe to resume in-person operations, this position will be based in UMSI offices in Ann Arbor.

Additional Information

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

This position requires:

  • frequent travel up and down stairs, 

  • the use of a cart to move equipment, 

  • some light overhead work for reflectors and lighting that may require ascending or descending a  stepstool, 

  • and moving, installing and and positioning moderately heavy (10-20 pound) equipment.
