The Department of Cell & Developmental Biology (CDB) at the University of Michigan Medical School is dedicated to conducting high-impact research and instructing and guiding trainees in the areas of cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, neuroscience, organogenesis, stem cell biology, and tissue repair and regeneration.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to be the program coordinator for the Ph.D. and postdoctoral fellow training program. CDB provides outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral training in fundamental aspects of cell and developmental biology, ranging from stem cells to regenerative medicine and organogenesis to cancer biology. In this position, you will be a key member of the graduate program team and serve as the primary staff liaison to the students and manages a broad range of programmatic and administrative responsibilities within the department, Medical School, and campus. This is a position full-time, with occasional weekend and evening hours during student recruitment (two weekends in the winter) and the CDB annual retreat (in the fall).

- You will independently, coordinate and manage the graduate program including, but not limited to, welcome and onboard new graduate students to CDB, non-academic advising, curricular items, student recruitment and admissions, administration of financial aid, appoint students in the University of Michigan HR system, track student records and ensure thesis committee meetings are held, and be the Department liaison for the Registrar’s Office, Rackham Graduate School, and the Program in Biomedical Sciences.
- You will independently coordinate and manage other trainees in the department (e.g., postdoctoral fellow program and visiting scholars) including, but not limited to, onboarding, advising, other non-training support, and work closely and collaborate with the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Rackham Graduate School.
- Provide administrative oversight and partner with the CDB Graduate Chair, CDB Postdoc Chair, and Associate Chair for Education & Training on graduate program initiatives. Be an active member of various CDB student-related committees.
- You will coordinate graduate and postdoctoral program events for the Department, including scientific retreat, student recruitment and admissions, orientation, graduate student and postdoc appreciation weeks, and other student/postdoc-related events.
- Creatively contribute to continuous improvement in the areas noted above and develop a good rapport with the trainees and CDB Graduate/Postdoc Chairs and Associate Chair. In doing this, you will coordinate with the CDB communications team to help tell our trainees’ stories for newsletters, annual reports, and other media outlets.
- This position reports to the Department Administrator with significant input provided by the CDB Graduate Program Chair, CDB Postdoc Chair, and Associate Chair.
- Bachelor degree or a combination of equivalent experience. A minimum of 3 years of professional student services experience in a higher education setting.
- You should enjoy working with a diverse team and diverse range of customers. You will need to have experience successfully supporting trainees from diverse backgrounds and have excellent verbal/written communication skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team and have a good understanding of the academic environment.
- You should have excellent project management, organizational, analytical, creative, and critical thinking skills.
- You should enjoy providing exceptional customer service, including being professional, flexible, resourceful, empathetic, and positive.
- Master or Ph.D. in a biomedical or related field is a plus.
- Good working knowledge of the University student service and human resource systems, Business Objects query tools, and Rackham Graduate School policies and procedures.
- Experience with the University student financial aid and course management systems. Experience with student data and ability to perform data analysis.
