Job Summary

The University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts seeks a candidate with a strong interest in the value of a liberal arts education who can demonstrate the ability to work with both students and faculty to create a better learning experience for undergraduate students.

The BlueCorps Advisor leads a team of student staff who work closely with undergraduates to help them develop and expand their knowledge of instructional technologies (including Google Suite, MS Office, Canvas, Wordpress, and audio-visual software and applications) and assist them as they apply those skills to use technology effectively and successfully in courses and other academic work. The Advisor manages student staff schedules term to term, hires and onboards new student staff each year, and holds BlueCorps meetings to keep the team connected with each other. The BlueCorps Advisor works closely with their supervisor and other Academic Technology Services staff to assess needs and develop training materials for student and faculty workshops, create resources for self-paced learning, and connect patrons to other valuable resources across campus. The BlueCorps Advisor sometimes leads workshops and provides one-on-one coaching for undergraduates themselves, as well as supervising a group of BlueCorps Assistants (student staff) in this work.

The ATS staff will provide all necessary training to the BlueCorps Advisor and will work closely with the BlueCorps Advisor on major projects. The BlueCorps Advisor will work with LSA instructional designers to develop skills in and understanding of instructional technology and instructional design, to further their professional development. This position is well suited to a career pathway in instructional support or technology support.

Hours: 40 hours per week (mostly during business hours, but may include occasional evening and weekend hours).

Supervision: BlueCorps Advisor will report to and work closely with the Manager of BlueCorps and of the Learning and Teaching Consultants.

Location: Primary office will be in Angell Hall, with student support hours in the LSA Media Center in the Modern Languages Building. Workshops in classrooms across central campus.

Technology: Workstation, mobile computing technology, software, and access to cloud resources will be provided.

On-site: This position supports both online and in-person courses, but this is an on-site position. Some flexibility is possible, but the Advisor must be on-site each day to supervise the BlueCorps desk location.

Responsibilities*

  • Supervise, Train, and Mentor student BlueCorps assistants to consult with and assist students, especially in how to peer-coach students to understand the purpose of various educational technologies and the goals of various assignments
  • Manage student and faculty support activities and initiatives – materials creation, train the trainer, manage communication and schedules
  • Provide technical and curricular support to students and faculty – one-on-one consultations, workshops, in-class assistance
  • Communication, promotion, and outreach; creating partnerships with other student success and instructional support units
  • Provide back-up and assistance to the LSA instructional designers (LTC)
  • Work with Academic Technology Services, Support Services, and other Technology Services teams to connect students and faculty with appropriate resources

Required Qualifications*

  • BA degree or equivalent.
  • Candidates must have an understanding of the value of a liberal arts education and a strong desire to create better learning experiences for undergraduate students.
  • Candidates must have ability to work with diverse constituencies and to lead groups; a demonstrated ability to work successfully in teams, as well as independently; ability to take initiative, and promote creative learning environments.
  • Candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. It is critical the person in this position is able to communicate effectively, listen carefully, and interpret requests accurately.
  • Candidates must have strong organizational skills and be detail oriented; have the ability to undertake multiple tasks at the same time and be able to prioritize among those multiple projects.
  • Candidates should have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with demonstrated ability to work enthusiastically and interact diplomatically with a diverse range of people.
  • Candidates must also be able to demonstrate a strong track record of dependability, punctuality, and reliability in prior work settings; be flexible in dealing with a changing environment; and be willing to learn new skills and take on new projects.
  • Candidates should also have hands-on experience with Canvas, Google Apps, Microsoft Office, and general familiarity with student response systems, social media, and web-based publication platforms including blogs and wikis.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Recent graduates with Liberal Arts  experience, a strong understanding of an academic structure with the Liberal Arts, and the goals and objectives of the Liberal Arts experience.
  • BA in a liberal arts field
  • Interest in student and faculty support, and academic technology.
  • Understanding of the Univerisity of Michigan  College of LSA courses and the challenges of undergraduate students in LSA learning environments; familiarity with LSA classrooms and UM campus resources.
  • Experience directing or supervising other people’s work on a complex project or in a work environment.
  • Demonstrated experience team-building or mentoring in Higher Ed environment; experience in peer-advising or tutoring college students.
  • Hands-on experience with Wordpress, Google Sites, Kaltura, Zoom and Bluejeans, Canvas; familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite and other multi-media creation tools.
