Job Summary

The communications team helps further the mission of the Alumni Association by sharing alumni stories, and connecting alums with everything that’s happening around the University. As the Director of Communications, you will implement and oversee the strategy and execution of content for the Alumni Association’s marketing channels ensuring brand consistency. You will also serve as managing editor of the Michigan Alumnus.

  • Develop, ensure and maintain brand consistency and stewardship across communications channels and platforms.
  • Lead strategic brand and alumni-focused campaigns that align with organizational priorities. 
  • Build a DEIJ based communications strategy (partnering with internal DEIJ team, HR and other stakeholders) including communications plans for major programs, reviewing creative assets with a DEIJ lens, proactively prioritizing communications initiatives and connecting the dots between our organizational strategy, the current environment and our alumni.
  • Lead creation of strategic marketing content including copy, editorial and art that helps build the Alumni Association’s brand through the use of digital marketing, audio stories, direct mail, print and online advertising, email, social media, and live events.
  • Showcase creative thinking by helping think through ideas to repurpose visual and written assets/stories on various platforms, and push for more digital adoption to reach younger audiences.
  • Innovate content by using tools, processes and data trends to create higher engagement for our podcasts, digital magazine, and email/ social communications.
  • Write feature stories, department pieces, and other communications content
  • Manage story development and selection by leading story meetings, conducting background research, and working with freelancers pitching ideas. Make story assignments to staff, freelancers, and  photographers, including preparing copy briefs and contracts.
  • Oversee creative campaign development, the editorial planning process for the Michigan Alumnus, and the Voices of Victors podcast along with team leads. 
  • Oversee and plan the budget for the Alumnus and brand work along with team leads. 
  • Lead a brand level response to PR, social media issues, critical communications and to all correspondence to the editor aligned with organizational and University values. Stay true to the voice of the Alumni Association and our commitment to serving all our alumni in an inclusive manner.
  • Effectively lead, manage and supervise the team communicating expectations, setting work schedules and priorities, providing opportunities for personal and professional growth through regular performance reviews, guidance, and encouraging training while presenting new techniques, and recruiting/hiring staff as needed
  • Work with other vendors, including external printing and design resources. Develop specifications for quotes and oversee contracts. 


General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide organizational leadership by demonstrating AAUM core values: All In, Serving Heart and Solution Seeker, and helping other staff members demonstrate those values.
  • Value and embrace different identities and diversity of thought recognizing that everyone has unique and different experiences that contribute to the best solution seeking and success for AAUM. 
  • Work with AAUM staff members to gain a clear and consistent understanding of the details of the strategic transformation and feel equal ownership of every piece of it, including pieces for which there is no direct responsibility.
  • Be inclusive and collaborative with every other member of the staff and every other team. Operate as a critical contributing member of the staff to complete objectives in many different areas in order to move the whole organization toward strategic transformation.
  • Support University Relations efforts by demonstrating AAUM value to campus units/partners (i.e., schools/colleges, campuses).
  • Staff team and Alumni Association events.
  • Provide staff support to the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, its committees, and other volunteers.
  • Coordinate special projects as assigned or required.
  • Participate in Alumni Association and other University committees as required.
  • Participate in team and staff meetings.
  • Share knowledge through internal communication.
  • Support the Alumni Association’s vision of becoming more relevant to all alumni.
  • Remain current with respect to technology and the University’s educational resources.

Required Qualifications*

  • 8+ years of experience building and scaling communications programs with an eye toward editorial planning and digital communications. 
  • 5+ years of proven experience hiring, managing and onboarding external agencies, along with leading teams
  • Deep experience developing strategic communications programs with an inclusive mindset, researching and understanding cultural nuances and differing global environments
  • Comfortable advising senior leadership and executives
  • Ability to think strategically, including analyzing data, extracting trends and applying findings to improve communications and products.
  • Experience driving tightly organized execution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience working in non-profit, media, higher-education or other consumer facing industries
  • Experience working on a breadth of media, including new media like podcasts, video and other digitally focused content.

Additional Information

This position may require some evening and weekend work.
