Job Summary

The University of Michigan is currently seeking a highly motivated, personable, and organized Research Assistant to work on a federally funded research study related to youth violence and substance use. The Research Assistant will be primarily responsible for recruiting potential participants 14-20 years of age seeking care in fast paced Emergency and Primary Care Departments at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI and at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw, MI.

Responsibilities*

As a critical component to the success of the study, the primary responsibility of this role will focus heavily on building rapport, patient engagement, community outreach, and encouraging participants to complete research activities. 
Responsibilities include:

  • Screen electronic medical records to identify eligible study participants, approaching potential participants in a timely manner.
  • Obtain informed consent in accordance with research protocols, procedures, and good clinical practice guidelines.
  • Administer survey assessments. Provide warm hand off for eligible participants to study Health Coaches. 
  • Performing and documenting risk assessments.
  • Attend mandatory study specific trainings and team meetings. Participate in research meetings and carrying out correspondence regarding study activities. 
  • Complete and file daily paperwork accurately and in a timely manner. 
  • Organizing and maintain study participant data. Performing medical data extraction as needed. Enter and clean data in ACCESS databases. 
  • Documenting accurate encounters and shift events, adhering to all study procedures, and communicating daily/weekly updates to study coordinator and recruitment lead. 
  • Assisting the follow-up team in preparing participant mailings, and scheduling and completing follow-up visits virtually and in the community. 
  • Other duties deemed necessary to maintain the smooth operation of the research program

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma/equivalent required.
  • This position requires flexibility and availability to work evenings and weekends, as well as some day shifts.
  • Reliable transportation will be necessary in order to complete participant interviews at various community locations.
  •  We are looking for someone who is personable, with excellent organizational skills; is detail-oriented, is flexible with scheduling, able to work independently and as a part of a team; and can communicate effectively.  
  • Must be comfortable with meeting and getting to know youth and their family.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Some college credits or Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, or related health field desirable.
  • Previous research experience, clinic/hospital work or volunteer experience, and knowledge of the research process is preferred.

Work Schedule

Most shifts will be afternoons/evenings, including weekends (typically shifts will range between the hours of 10am and 12a), as well as some day shifts on an as needed basis. This position is for five 8 hour shifts per work week.

Under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
