The Natural Products Biosciences Initiative at the University of Michigan is currently seeking outstanding discovery scientists to fill two positions: one at the rank of Assistant Professor, and one at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level. We are particularly interested in applications with a focus on natural products research relating to synthetic biology, bioinformatics, and the microbiome link to human health and disease. Individuals from groups historically under-represented in the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
Faculty will hold a tenure-track or tenured instructional appointment in one of the University's schools and colleges, and may also request an appointment in applicable research professor rank in the Life Sciences Institute (LSI). Joint appointments are likely in the Medical School, the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the College of Engineering, the Dental School, or the College of Pharmacy. All faculty are expected to participate in the University of Michigan's teaching mission and to demonstrate commitment to service in the larger community.
The University of Michigan is dedicated to fundamental discovery in the chemical, biological and computational sciences in state-of-the-art collaborative physical spaces. Through basic discovery, the University and the Life Sciences Institute seeks to advance knowledge in critical areas of natural product sciences with an ultimate goal of contributing to human health including cancer, metabolic disorders, brain disorders, infectious disease and beyond.
The LSI is currently home to 23 faculty members in the disciplines of chemistry, cell biology, physiology, genetics, chemical biology, biophysics, structural biology, and stem cell biology, including one Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and several members of the National Academies of Medicine or Sciences. Our culture centers on upholding scientific excellence, embracing risk, and collaborating across disciplines to achieve an impact greater than the sum of our individual parts.
In addition to faculty labs, the University of Michigan and the Life Sciences Institute houses state-of-the-art instrumentation and computing. Additional resources include the Natural Products Discovery Core, a high-throughput screening center with extensive chemical collections and a unique library of natural product extracts, and a comprehensive protein production, X-ray crystallography, and cryoelectron microscopy facility. The LSI is also home to the U-M Ph.D. Program in Chemical Biology.
Candidates are expected to develop an internationally recognized program of scholarly research and to excel in teaching and mentoring at the graduate level. The position will remain open until filled, but preference will be given to applicants who have submitted all requested materials prior to September 30, 2021.
