The University of Michigan Medical School’s Department of Learning Health Sciences seeks qualified tenure-track faculty candidates (open rank) to broaden existing scholarship within the school and the U-M community in the area of Anti-racist Data Science. Areas of research and teaching may include, but are not limited to:
Racial bias and unintended racist consequences in data, algorithms, and technologies that enable healthcare;
Data-driven, anti-racist, health policy analysis regarding racial disparities in health insurance, healthcare access, quality, and safety;
Healthcare provider education and point-of-care informatics interventions to reduce healthcare providers’ implicit racial biases and enhance their structural competence; and
Community-driven, technology-enabled models of healthcare delivery that address racism as a social determinant of health and empower racialized communities in service/intervention design.
We especially welcome scholars who have demonstrated expertise in anti-racist research methods, interdisciplinary scholarship experience, and a commitment to translating research into practice. Given that this position may be filled by faculty candidates early in rank through later in their careers, consideration will be adjusted accordingly regarding demonstrated expertise versus commitment to a line of future research. Similarly, the position will come with rank-specific resources (e.g. start-up package).
This position is part of a new faculty cluster at the University of Michigan focused on “Racial Justice in Healthcare: Informatics and Data-Driven Approaches.” This cluster hire of five faculty (one within each unit) will focus on using informatics and data science methods to detect, understand, and reduce structural racism within healthcare, and racial healthcare disparities. Faculty will he hired in the following units:
the School of Information;
College of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy;
University of Michigan Medical School, Department of Learning Health Sciences;
School of Nursing, Department of Health Behavior and Biological Sciences; and
School of Public Health, Department of Health Management and Policy.
There will be additional support for cross-school collaborations within the cluster. The clusters are part of a university-wide faculty hiring initiative that seeks to hire at least 20 faculty members over the next three years with a scholarly focus on racial inequality and structural racism.
The successful candidate should have demonstrated excellence in or strong potential for peer-reviewed publication and external research funding, collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives, and for working with students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates are expected to have completed a PhD or the equivalent in information, informatics health or biomedical informatics, computer science, information science, or a related field.

Job duties include research, teaching, and service. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conducting scholarly research resulting in publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, edited books, books, and conference proceedings
Seeking outside funding to support their research
Teaching in DLHS’s academic programs, including the Health Infrastructures and Learning Systems (HILS) MS or PhD programs
Mentoring students for independent studies, master’s projects, and doctoral dissertations.
Providing service to the school, University, and the broader academic community by way of committee work, journal editing, and other various opportunities

The University of Michigan Medical School Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) is a first-in-the-nation basic science department focused on the sciences related to learning across multiple levels of scale (i.e. individual, group, organization, region, nation). DLHS works to improve health in systemic ways by advancing the sciences that make learning effective, routine, and efficient. The Department is a basic science department in the University of Michigan Medical School, home to vibrant research and teaching programs, with 25 core faculty and more than 25 joint/adjunct faculty FTE. We offer four degree programs: the Health Infrastructures and Learning Systems Ph.D. and MS program, an online HILS MS Degree, and a Master’s in Health Professions Education. In addition, we offer a Precision Health Certificate program and a professional development program for working professionals, the Medical Education Scholars Program. The Department is also home to the University of Michigan’s Clinical Simulation Center, offering curriculum-based, hands-on, simulation-based learning to trainees and faculty throughout the institution.
The Department is situated within the University of Michigan Medical School, founded in 1850 and one of the first major medical schools in the United States to admit female students and students of color. The Medical School has 20 clinical and 9 basic science departments and graduates approximately 170 physicians each year, 64% of which identify as female and 26.2% are underrepresented in medicine. The Medical School is included under the umbrella of Michigan Medicine, which is the academic medical center of the University of Michigan. Within Michigan Medicine is the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion (OHEI), a unit focused on developing mechanisms for inclusion, diversity and cultural sensitivity among faculty, students, and staff at Michigan Medicine. Michigan Medicine recently launched its Anti-Racism Oversight Committee (AROC), a committee of leaders from around the institution tasked with developing and recommending actions necessary to eliminate racism and inequities existing at Michigan Medicine.

Ph.D. or the equivalent in an area such as information, informatics health or biomedical informatics, computer science, information science, or a related field
Demonstrated interest and/or experience with teaching at the graduate level
A strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and cultural diversity
