Job Summary

This is a full- time position that involves being an integral member of  the Pediatric Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry Service. The Pediatric Consultation-Liaison team supports in delivering care to medically hospitalized youth with psychiatric comorbidities or psychiatric emergencies. The role will serve as part of a team that includes a nurse practitioner and psychiatrist that will primarily support expanded mental health consultation to youth in the Children’s Emergency Service of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. There will also be opportunity to support mental health consultation to youth on the medical floors and intensive care units at the Children’s Hospital.

The social worker will be working evenings and weekends, collaborating closely with members of the Consultation Service, as well as members of the medical services, including medical social workers,  to assist in the delivery of mental health interventions for these youth and their families.   

This position will support in meeting the spectrum of needs for youth and families the Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Services engages with. The social worker will work closely with members of the Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service and medical service (including medical social work) to support with disposition and discharge planning including facilitate transfer to inpatient psychiatric units or other external psychiatric care facilities. The social worker will also identify and provide mental health and community resources for patients and families.  The social worker will also be expected to be involved in psychoeducation, safety planning, care coordination and team meetings. There may also be opportunity to conduct clinical assessments and provide brief psychotherapeutic intervention with the supervision of the psychiatrist on the CL team. Knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis, mental health interventions, and community resources is desired. Experience working with youth and families during psychiatric crisis is also preferred.

You will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing records, diagnostic assessment, symptom monitoring, care management and care coordination, evaluating and recording progress with respect to treatment goals, and ongoing collaboration with the patient’s primary medical team and other relevant subspecialty services while drawing on social work experience and ongoing assessment of patient needs.
  • Providing discharge planning for psychiatry patients in the Child Emergency Service  and inpatient medical services who are being actively followed by the CL Service.
  • Participating in team meetings and other care coordination meetings on the CL service.  This will require preparation, and the ability to make case presentations accurately and concisely.
  • Working directly with patients both face-to-face and by phone contacts.  Some family work will occur via zoom or telephone.
  • Brief therapeutic interventions drawing on evidence-based psychotherapies, psychoeducation, safety planning, assisting family members in understanding and supporting the patient, grief counseling, and referrals to community resources are some of the (skills needed) additional duties of (in) this position.
  • Opportunities for clinical assessment and brief psychotherapeutic intervention may be available in the future as the CL service grows.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
  • A current license to practice social work in the State of Michigan.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience with medical and mental health social work.
  • Previous experience working in a Children’s hospital setting or other comparable pediatric medical setting.
  • Experience in brief psychotherapeutic interventions and clinical assessment.
  • Skilled in developing rapport and effectively communicating with a diverse patient population.
  • Efficient, accurate assessment of patient needs and effective case dispositions.
  • Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic medical clinic.
  • Independent, sound decision-making is necessary for success in this position.
  • Effective collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely clinical records by computer.
  • Experience with evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions (e.g., CBT, PST, ACT, DBT) and familiarity with brief, structured interventions (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Activation) along with a basic knowledge of psychopharmacology.
  • Experience and knowledge about the vast array of psychiatric disorders and their presentation in a hospital setting.
  • Knowledge about suicide assessment and the impact on family system of a suicidal child. Evidence-based safety planning techniques required.

Work Schedule

This is full time, 40 hour/week position. The exact schedule is yet to be determined but will be weekends for 10-12 hour shifts.

Work Locations

This position will work out of two primary work site locations:

  • Inpatient medical units and the Children’s Emergency Service, both located at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
  • There will be available workspace in a designated office area near the two primary clinical work sites to allow for clinical activities and collaboration with the CL team.

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Advancement through the career ladder at the Expert or Clinical Scholar Level is required for placement in the MSW Senior Classification
