The Population Studies Center (PSC) at the Institute for Social Research is seeking a Statistician who will join a team of analysts to provide scientific and technical support to researchers in the center in the areas of data science and statistics.
The ideal candidate for this position will use a mix of technical, statistical, computational, and consulting skills to work with clients (PSC faculty and external clients) on various research projects and proposals, and will independently conduct analyses of research data generated by the faculty. Roles and responsibilities of this position are to: work directly with faculty research projects to provide technical support and guidance on data analysis methods, study design, high-performance computing, data visualization, and data security and storage; conduct statistical analyses and provide programming support and data management; facilitate access to public use and restricted data; offer guidance on data management and data safeguarding; and consult with and train population researchers on all of these topics as part of an initiative designed to enhance the research productivity and external research support of the PSC faculty. This position will be supervised by the Research Area Specialist Senior.
PSC is an interdisciplinary center at the University of Michigan in which researchers conduct domestic and international research in several key areas of demographic research: Health and Social Inequalities; Social-Biological Interactions; Population Health and Well-being; Families, Fertility, and Children; Population Dynamics; and Methodologies and Data.
Major areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
- Writing, validating, and documenting statistical code in packages including SAS, Stata, R, and others as needed, that permits the cleaning, summarizing, and analysis of demographic and survey data (50%)
- Consulting with clients, PSC faculty, and staff on: 1) obtaining public use and restricted data; 2) accessing and using secure data enclaves and other computing resources, 3) processing, cleaning, and manipulating complex data files, 4) designing studies, conducting statistical analyses and troubleshooting and optimizing programming code, and 5) managing and safeguarding data (30%)
- Preparing tables, figures, data visualizations, and analytic text based on data analyses (20%)
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree with preference for a Master's degree in a relevant statistical or quantitative social science discipline and/or 1 to 3 years of research experience in a research setting involving statistical analysis, data science, data management, and computing, with a preference of 2+ years of quantitative data analysis
- Command of one or more of the following languages: SAS, R, Stata, and Python
- Strong computing skills, including the ability to learn new software packages quickly
- Demonstrated continuous development of programming and analytic skills
- Experience with text analysis, machine learning, or other algorithm-based programming a plus, alongside working with large and complex data sets
- Demonstrated creativity and flexibility in applying skills toward identifying and resolving data management and analysis issues, experience working with restricted data and data safeguarding procedures a plus
- Demonstrated experience engaging with stakeholders to constructively build partnerships and share capabilities and opportunities for technical support and also proactively share project progress and status
- Experience and familiarity with work in interdisciplinary social science settings is desirable
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize efforts across multiple simultaneous projects
- Personal commitment to high quality work with the ability to work as part of a team and individually while meeting deadlines
