The Survey Research Center (SRC) at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (ISR) invites applications for a full-time position of Research Scientist (open rank) at the Data Science for Dynamic Decision-making lab (d3lab).
The d3lab is a vibrant interdisciplinary research program at the Survey Research Center (SRC) of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan with strong ties across campus including the Departments of Statistics, Biostatistics, Psychology, and the Medical School, including the Eisenberg Family Depression Center. With its track record of methodological novelty, impact and outreach over the past 15 years, d3lab prides itself as a national and international resource for developing cutting-edge methods to optimize adaptive interventions. This includes the development of methods to optimize personalized, technology-based interventions in mHealth.
An exciting opportunity has been created for an enterprising scholar interested in the application of novel methodologies for building health interventions that leverage digital technology (e.g., mobile devices, wearable sensors) to promote positive behavior change. This scholar will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts to design new studies, launch and lead scientific teams, guide data collection, and analyze intensive longitudinal data from studies employing digital technology.
The research scientist will work on the application, advancement, and dissemination of novel methodologies for building highly efficacious technology-based interventions. This includes the design or analysis of Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trials (SMARTs), Micro-Randomized Trials (MRTs) and related trial designs. Of particular interest is a candidate with experience or an interest in the analysis of intensively collected longitudinal data. Duties will include:
- Leading and coordinating collaborative efforts on funded projects with scientists from various disciplines (including computer science, statistics and behavioral science);
- Guiding the design of studies for developing technology-based interventions for promoting behavior change
- Conducting data analyses, including data arising from a SMART or MRTs;
- Participating in conference presentations and scientific articles for publication;
- Participating in team teaching of courses and workshops;
- Participating in the development of novel tools for disseminating the cutting-edge methods being developed by d3lab faculty
- Leading efforts to ensure that study designs and associated data analyses are replicable
The Research Scientist will also help pursue external funding in support of additional research related to existing projects, and will be supported and encouraged to pursue funding for their own research on technology-based interventions.
Requirements for this position are a
- Ph.D. in behavioral or health sciences; or Ph.D. in statistics or biostatistics with a demonstrated interest in the behavioral or health sciences, particularly intervention science, will also be considered;
- Excellent interpersonal and management skills;
- Strong data management skills;
- Experience with manipulating and analyzing large data sets;
- Demonstrated experience in the scientific and technical management of large research projects;
- Strong communication skills;
- Excellent written and oral English communication skills are required.
The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated skills in creating reproducible code, excellent skills in at least one major programming language (Stata, R, or SAS) and prior experience working in a research setting.
Background in any of the following areas will be considered a plus: substance use or HIV risk behavior; longitudinal data analysis; machine learning; causal inference; and experimental design (e.g., factorial experiments, SMARTs, MRTs).
A deep interest in using cutting-edge study design and analytic methods to optimize adaptive interventions or just-in-time adaptive interventions to improve health outcomes is necessary. Although desirable, prior experience in designing SMARTs and MRTs, or in analyzing data arising from them is not required.
This would be a 12-month appointment. Salary is highly competitive.
