35% Lab supervision and management
Outfits and maintains a functional research lab, including ordering/inventory of supplies, maintenance of elaborate and highly specialized computer and laboratory equipment, accounting and allocation of grant institutional finances, and oversight of daily lab activities. Responsible for responding to lab emergencies. Supervises and trains staff scientists, research fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, including but not limited to experimental design, literature review, genetic and molecular biology techniques, advanced microscopy, in vivo imaging techniques, cell culture, documentation, data analysis and compilation of data for publication and/or grant applications. Coordinates assignments, schedules experiments, organizes collection and storage of experimental samples/techniques, collects time sheets. Reviews progress, evaluates results, and recommends changes in procedures to the PI Teaches research methods and underlying theory, oversees student progress, communicates with faculty about student progress. Maintains regulatory compliance through writing, submitting and maintenance of all regulatory protocols (IACUC, IBC and IRB) and ensures employee compliance to these regulations. Communicates routinely with the PI to oversee multiple staff and research projects.
35% Plan and Direct Scientific Experiments
Independent operation and possession of a comprehensive knowledge of biology with specialization in cardiac disease and function to complete complex project assignments. Conduct literature and library searches, review scientific journals for information concerning experimental procedures. Organize information for use in projects. Write and recommend experimental procedure modifications. Plans and directs scientific experiments investigating mechanisms of cardiovascular repair and therapeutic strategies for cardiac ischemia. Investigates a novel model of cardiovascular angiogenesis via study of the angiogenic response to myocardial infarction in Acomys cahirinus. In addition, plans and directs projects related to stem cell repair of cardiovascular tissue, lysophosphatidic acid receptor modulation of immune signaling, immunomodulatory therapeutics, and engineering approaches to increasing stem cell adherence in the heart, using state of the art molecular and imaging techniques such as 10x genomics, in vivo and tissue clearing imaging techniques, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, qRT-PCR, ELISA, pharmacology, genetic techniques, surgery, cell culture, and other molecular assays. Collects data, analyzes results, and compiles results for publication or grant submission. Manages multiple animal colonies, including breeding, genotyping and inventory. Brings new models and methods to the lab. Directs projects encompassing the work of a team of lab members including graduate level students, staff, and post-doctoral scholars. Reviews progress, evaluates results, and implements changes as the project PI. Expected to design animal studies and perform experiments and provide daily guidance for post-doctoral fellows and graduate students for their studies. In addition, be responsible for troubleshooting experimental and technical issues in the lab independently.
15% Surgery, Recovery and Perfusion
Provides surgical expertise in permanent ligation of the left descending coronary artery as a model of myocardial infarction. Performs intra-myocardial stem cell injections to the left ventricular wall of mouse heart. Also performs surgical implantation of Matrigel® for studies of angiogenesis. Provides expertise in cannulation of the ascending aorta for preservation and study of cardiac tissues. Proficient in multiple surgical models and expertise in learning new surgical procedures.
15% Scientific Presentation and Writing of Manuscripts, Grants, and Regulatory Protocols
Write manuscripts and grant applications. Provide expert peer review assistance as a subject matter expert with collaborators. Present research findings at national conferences in oral and poster formats. Attend meetings and conferences presenting information to build a reputation as a subject matter expert at a national level as a principle investigator. Writes, submits and maintains all institutional regulatory protocols and assures compliance to said protocols.
The position requires a minimum of 5 years management experience including laboratory management. Position requires a strong knowledge of research design and implementation, cell and molecular biology, histology and imaging techniques, as well as knowledge of and experience with institutional regulatory procedures and protocol submission. The candidate should have experience with in vivo imaging and clearing protocols. In addition, the candidate should provide evidence of strong communication and presentation skills as well as a strong publication track record and a strong background in animal models, pharmacology and surgical expertise.
- Senior Level: Bachelor's Degree required. 5-6 years of related experience, i.e., published in a field of specialty and academic knowledge in a field of discipline. Master's or Doctoral Degree preferred.
- Lead Level: Bachelor's Degree required. 6+ years of related experience, i.e., published in a field of specialty and academic knowledge in a field or discipline. Doctoral Degree in field of expertise or Master's Degree and equivalent experience preferred.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
