Job Summary

As the Assistant Vice Provost, you will report to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic and Budgetary Affairs and serve as a key member of the university's resource allocation team. You will oversee a range of activities involving the analysis, development and management of the general fund budget and serve as a strategic advisor on budget issues to the Provost and Senior Vice Provost. You will communicate with leadership across our institution regarding budgetary matters and represent the Provost's office in partnering with departments across campus. You will be the bridge between department-specific finance teams and Provost's Office finance teams while providing consulting, support and guidance to all partners with a focus on high-quality deliverables.


  • Provide strategic analysis and guidance to both the Provost, Senior Vice Provost and departments across campus on our general fund budget including implications for resource planning, strategic programs and policies
  • Advise campus leaders and consult with departments to resolve budget and financial issues
  • Develop and recommend options for updates to budgetary policies and procedures
  • Understand campus-wide and department-specific financial considerations and bring forward those perspectives to our team
  • Collaborate with experts on communication needs related to budgetary matters, long-term budget plans, tuition levels, cost containment efforts, benefits and financial aid
  • Maintain a high-level of organization while managing competing priorities
  • Use your data-informed mindset to create models and tools to analyze issues and make recommendations
  • Use change management best practices to communicate and implement recommendations
  • Compose reports and presentations on budgetary topics for the Board of Regents, State of Michigan, Executive Officers, Academic and Administrative Leadership and other leaders
  • Measure and report on progress toward institutional goals
  • Be a primary member of the Provost Office Resource Allocation Team
  • Lead, support and guide related committees and continuous improvement projects
  • Work with diverse teams at all organizational levels across a large, de-centralized organization

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's or graduate-level degree in finance, accounting, business administration, higher education administration or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience leading a finance function including developing budgets, allocating resources, financial analysis and strategic planning
  • Experience working in a decentralized, higher education institution
  • 4+ years applying project management best practices in your work
  • Demonstrated experience working with executive leadership and fiduciary policy development
  • Advanced proficiency in financial management systems and data analytics
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication at all levels of an organization
  • Knowledge of anti-racism and inclusive organization principles
  • Interest in working in a dynamic environment

Additional Information

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
