Job Summary

The Behavioral Health Workforce Research Center (BHWRC) is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The BHWRC is seeking an experienced researcher with expertise in policy analysis to join an interdisciplinary team conducting research to strengthen the workforce responsible for prevention and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders by conducting studies to inform national workforce development and planning efforts.

The Research Analyst will work closely with the Center’s program manager, research area specialists, statistician, research assistants, faculty investigators, and principal investigator to collect, analyze, manage workforce policy data for research projects. This position is term-limited on grant funding from the date of hire until August 31, 2022 with the possibility of renewal.

What You'll Do

Research Design and Development

  • Collaborate with the research team in developing, designing, and conducting research projects according to a specified work plan.
  • Provide technical support for ongoing decisions regarding methodology, study design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Work with the research team to develop statistical analyses that address proposed research questions.
  • Provide recommendations on study methodologies to fit specific research requirements.
  • Coordinate analysis plans and timelines with all Center Investigators.

Data and Policy Analysis

  • Provide leadership and technical expertise to Center researchers focused on the development, evaluation, and y analysis of legislation and policies related to health workforce. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and refine research and evaluation materials; collect, analyze, and present data; and contribute to research deliverables.
  • Research and summarize evidence on behavioral health policy topics, draft issue briefs and policy memos
  • Review and evaluate behavioral health workforce legislation and policies, determine drawbacks and benefits of existing policies, and propose suggestions to improve the effects of policies.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to determine needs and goals of policies.
  • Prepare and present informal and formal presentations for a variety of stakeholders.


  • Contribute to formulating and writing of sections on methodology, study design, statistical analysis, and policy impact for grant proposals, manuscripts, policy briefs and/or technical reports.
  • Prepare and present informal and formal virtual and in person presentations for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Interpret research results and provide policy recommendations, written and oral summaries, and graphic visualizations of analyses.

Other duties as assigned

  • Some travel, including overnight travel, to national conferences may be required.

Skills You Have

  • Bachelor’s degree public health, health management, public policy, or social work with five or more years of experience.
  • Experience in policy analysis and familiarity with behavioral health issues and/or workforce policies
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent research and analytical skills and an ability to work with complex databases
  • Proficiency in data visualization and other tools for communicating research findings
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and complete assignments independently with excellent attention to detail and under general supervision; ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Graduate degree in public health, health management, public policy, or social work with at least 2 years of experience
