Job Summary

The Department of Learning Health Sciences in the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking an experienced, positive, highly motivated, and organized person to work with a growing research team. The Research Area Specialist Intermediate will work with the principal investigator and other research team members to efficiently carry out a range of tasks associated with qualitative and quantitative data, including database management and basic data analysis, other general research duties related to project operations. This position is expected to make independent decisions that impact research operations. The position would involve work on an NIH sponsored project involving the implementation and evaluation of a mental health evidence-based practice aimed to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in the serious mental illness population.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with general data related activities including organizing and managing project databases; creating electronic surveys; performing data cleaning and creating databases from electronic survey data; and developing and implementing data quality control measures.
  • Work closely with data analyst to assist in performing statistical analyses.
  • Assist with qualitative data research activities including creating qualitative interview guides and conducting interviews; coding and analyzing qualitative data.
  • Assist with the recruitment and enrollment of participants; track study participants and monitor completion of data collection.
  • Track subject incentive payments and assist in preparing and submitting payment requests. 
  • Attend Community Working Group meetings and Community Advisory Board meetings with study participants and assist with preparing agendas, slides, and notetaking.
  • Attend regular meetings related to progress of project and provide study updates.  
  • Assist with literature review and writing sections of working papers.
  • Assist with preparation of posters and/or abstracts for presentations at local and national meetings. 
  • Assist in preparation of state and federal reports. 
  • Help plan and coordinate work of students and entry level research staff under the supervision of the PI and project manager; ensure work of students and entry level research staff is meeting project goals. 
  • Perform additional research duties as assigned. 
  • Opportunity for independent project if desired.


Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Public Health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Services), Informatics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or related field

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in research area 

  • Previous experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods, including survey research

  • Experience with computerized data entry instruments and statistical analysis software (e.g., Stata, R)

  • Data management experience and experience with basic data analyses

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Able to manage time, organize and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines

  • Competency with Microsoft Suite and G Suite, including being able to import data from Excel and related databases into statistical software

  • Ability to be self-directed and work independently within a team of researchers 

  • Strong computer skills and interest in learning and training in new software are critical


Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with handling missing data
  • Experience with analyzing complex datasets (e.g., nested data, intensive longitudinal data) 
  • Experience with Qualtrics and other survey data collection tools
  • Experience using Endnote
  • Interest in working in mental health research
  • Knowledge of quality improvement and management best practices
  • Background/experience in implementation research


Background Screening
