Annually, the MM Office of Development raises an average of $190 million which helps us to be a change agent of the world. The Office of Development supports a culture of flexibility and a hybrid work arrangement is possible for this position.

This position will oversee all philanthropic fundraising activity for the University of Michigan’s eight basic science departments and the Michigan Neuroscience Institute (MNI). This is a pivotal role within MM’s Office of Development with critical strategic responsibilities to cultivate and develop long term support of basic science research at Michigan.

Strategic Planning & Collaboration (40%)

  • Create a comprehensive business plan that will drive development for the Basic Sciences and its affiliated units.
  • Meet regularly and liaise closely with basic science department chairs and MNI co-directors, associated faculty and staff to identify funding priorities and needs, creating development strategies that align therein.
  • Create an annual plan for fundraising by working closely in coordination and collaboration with chairs and directors, faculty and administrative officers.
  • In collaboration with the basic science chairs and MNI co-directors, create and manage an external advisory board, developing a charge for the board and recruiting appropriate individuals.

Donor & Prospect Management (40%)

  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of major gift and planned giving prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers. Discovery work will play an important part of this goal.
  • Plan systematic, appropriate and effective solicitation strategies for the basic science and MNI units’ major and planned gift prospects. Typical gift portfolio of gifts is $50,000 to $1,000,000.

Other (20%)

  • Develop interdepartmental basic science alumni gatherings to identify high-capacity alumni, promote continuing departmental engagement, and provide professional networking opportunities among alumni.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least five of experience in fundraising, including prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy, with a commitment to confidentiality.  A creative approach to fundraising and developing donor prospects will also be important.
  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts.
  • Candidate will be required to have reliable internet service.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge, familiarity and comfort with science-related research themes found in the basic science arena.
  • Progressively responsible development experience in an academic health system setting or science/health foundation with a comprehensive development program.
  • Master’s degree in science related area

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
