Job Summary

The Division of Hematology/Oncology is seeking to hire a Physician Assistant (PA) or a Nurse Practitioner NP) to join our inpatient hematology consult service.
The inpatient hematology consult service helps in the workup and care of patients with a wide variability of clinical presentations and laboratory findings, ranging from blood count abnormalities, concerns for microangiopathic hemolytic processes, hemoglobinopathies, hemostasis/thrombosis, and occasionally malignant hematological conditions, among others. Some of these consults are urgent while others are routine. The consult service also performs bone marrow biopsies to evaluate for bone marrow processes. 
Advanced practice providers (APPs) work in close collaboration with attending physicians, fellows, and resident trainees to assist with triaging consults, complete history and physical examinations and other daily documentation, evaluate and manage patients, determine diagnostic and treatment plans, and communicate our recommendations with the primary teams. The role also includes performing bone marrow biopsies.

Responsibilities*

  • Assess and triage patients we are asked to consult on. 
  • Assess new consults for relevant & complete health and medical history, perform an appropriate physical examination and complete documentation related to the consult.
  • Manage the care of admitted patients, including the following:
    • Recommend appropriate diagnostic studies and treatments for acute conditions and manage co-existing conditions. This will be done after discussion with the attending physician and fellow on service. 
    • Review, interpret, and manage diagnostic test data.
    • Competently perform bone marrow biopsies for the hematology consult service and help the hematology inpatient service (MHE) with bone marrow biopsies when requested. 
    • Safely coordinate transfer of care from seeing the patient in the inpatient setting to outpatient follow-up in the hematology clinic. 
    • Call the teams consulting the hematology service and discuss our recommendations with them. As above, this will be done after discussion with the attending physician and fellow on service. 
  • Participate in case conferences (including presenting patients seen on the consult service). This is expected to be a rare occurrence. 
  • Orient and precept newly onboarding APPs and/or trainees as appropriate.
  • Maintain knowledge of medical principles, practices, standards, and techniques in accordance with Michigan Medicine policies and procedures, Medical Staff Bylaws and State and Federal laws/regulations. 
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with physician other health care providers.
  • Seek consultation/discussion with faculty, as appropriate, for concerns and issues outside the one’s scope of knowledge or skills. 

Nursing Specific Info

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position.  Applicants who have left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include on their resume dates of past employment including months and years of service along with effort. Nursing Specific Info

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Required Qualifications*

NP: 

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). 
  • Current DEA registration required
  • ACLS certification

PA

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by ARC-PA or one of its predecessor agencies. 
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required  
  • Current DEA registration required
  • ACLS certification

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous advanced practice employment experience in an inpatient care area. 
  • At least 1 year of clinical advanced practice provider employment experience.
  • Prior hematology and/or oncology experience
  • Additional specialty certifications related to inpatient care. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clinical tasks efficiently and effectively with attention to detail. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (oral and written).
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a team-based model of care. 
  • Demonstrated ability to role model professional behavior in all situations. 
  • Demonstrated high level of critical thinking. 
  • Demonstrated high level of motivation to learn and participate in diverse patient care activities. 
  • Able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate job requirements. 
  • Able to physically don and doff PPE required for droplet and airborne isolation. 
  • Ability to perform bone marrow biopsies. It is not a requirement for the applicant to know how to perform bone marrow biopsies, but as the procedure is part of the job, the applicant needs to be willing to learn and perform these procedures on the hematology consult service.  
  • Ability to adhere to Michigan Medicine protocols for protecting patients and workforce members in the management of patients with confirmed COVID-19 and PUIs.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and abilities to work productively with a variety of providers and trainees, as measured by references and interviews.
  • Ability to work independently with appropriate level of supervision
     

Work Schedule

Shift/Hours:  40-hour work week (M-F) with some shift flexibility 

Primary location: University Hospital

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
