Job Summary

The Assistant Director for Academic Programs is a new position that is designed to facilitate and maximize student engagement with a wide range of resources and that support their academic development.  The Assistant Director will have the opportunity to design and implement programming that ensures equitable access to the full complement of academic and personal skiills needed to succeed in the legal profession. In particular there will be an opportunity to further develop a professionalism program that spans the 1L, 2L and 3L years, including professional identity formation and ethical awareness components.

  • Works in close collaboration with Assistant Dean for Academic Programming on a host of issues relating to curricular planning and implementation.
  • Works to expand the academic success programming to include 1L, 2L, and 3L support to create greater equity and access to information regarding academic best practices; works with the Peer Mentoring program and faculty advisor.
  • Collaborates with faculty, academic deans, academic support professionals, and student organizations to foster community, create opportunities for student learning and support, including skills workshops and faculty panels.
  • Develops Professional Identity formation programming that includes strategic academic planning; exploration; and course mapping.
  • Enhances the Law School community commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including designing inclusive programming; planning the annual Michigan Access Program on social identity and justice.
  • Develops resources and programming on academic advising, and coordinates provision of academic support services, including services to students whose performance indicates opportunity for improvement.
  • Works closely with student groups to enrich the climate both within and outside the classroom, on programming that is interest specific (ex. Students for Legal Education Reform, Student Services Advisory Board).
  • Maintains a regular schedule of student appointments, providing individual counseling on a wide array of student academic and personal issues and concerns.
  • Stays abreast of other University offices, such as the Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office, Services for Students with Disabilities regarding new support programs and developments of best practices.
  • Plans and executes annual orientation and Law as a Service Profession program.
  • Attends a variety of student-led events and activities, including on weekends and during evenings.
  • Provides individual counseling and guidance on all components of the bar exam application process, including accommodations and the Multistate Responsibility Exam.
  • Develops professionalism programming amplifying cultural competence and cross cultural communication in accordance with the obligations of the MRPC, including understanding discriminatory and anti-discriminatory conduct.

Required Qualifications*

J.D. degree is required. Qualified candidates will have a strong college student development orientation and will be able to create a dynamic and welcoming collegiate environment. A highly qualified candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, as well as demonstrated cultural competencies and ability to work within and contribute to a diverse campus community. Candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, counseling and academic advising experience, and project management skills. Experience with accommodations and evaluation is preferred. Candidate will demonstrate a collaborative work-style, team-building and leadership skills. Candidate will understand student retention. Candidate will exercise sound judgment and handle confidential information appropriately according to FERPA and other compliance requirements. Willingness to work evenings and weekends is required.
