- Assist the Senior Operating Engineer Shift Leader in the operations and maintenance of the power plant and site utilities on a specific shift. This includes but is not limited to high-pressure steam boilers, steam and combustion turbines, generators, cooling towers, compressed air, water treatment systems, refrigeration, HVAC, controls and associated equipment, and primary utility distribution systems. May operate power plant under the direction of the Senior Operating Engineer Shift Leader and take direction from the Plant Manager.
- Perform inspections on equipment under the control of the Utilities Group in a given section of the campus, to ensure that equipment is in good operating order and document same or needed repairs.
- Perform and monitor repairs to equipment along with the mechanic assigned to the area.
- May direct the activities of tradespeople and outside service people assigned to jobs during his/her shift.
- Perform analysis and treatment of feed water, boiler water, service water, and effluents to meet required standards.
- Perform routine and non-routine maintenance or make adjustments as needed for building HVAC equipment, controls and filters, utilizing DCS and BAS control systems.
- Troubleshoot equipment problems using a variety of test equipment.
- Take appropriate action to insure the safety of personnel and protection of property as indicated by fire and mechanical alarm systems, security, etc., as need arises.
- Maintain adequate inventory of materials and supplies for assigned areas and request replenishment when required.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- A City of Detroit Third Class Stationary Engineers license or equivalent, or obtain the licenses or equivalent within one year after start date.
- A City of Detroit Third Class Refrigeration Operators license or equivalent, or obtain the licenses or equivalent within one year after start date.
- At least two years Maritime or Powerhouse operating experience working with high-pressure boilers, steam and combustion turbines, generators, electrical distribution and switching, and refrigeration equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of mathematics in the industrial environment, including basic physics and chemistry for power plant operations, process equipment and instrumentation fundamentals, steam system basics, and boiler and turbine operations.
- Considerable mechanical aptitude.
- The understanding of powerhouse control systems, Windows, Microsoft Office, Excel, some experience in safely trouble shooting electrical problems, welding and pipefitting.
- Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in the classification in an environment that has high levels of heat and noise. This position constantly positions self to service and repair powerhouse equipment traversing under and over obstacles, ascends/descends ladders to service and repair powerhouse equipment, and routinely moves powerhouse equipment and materials weighing up to 50lbs.
- Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others.
- Act in accordance with the Facilities and Operations' guiding principles: respect, collaboration, proactive, solutions-based and responsibility to the environment.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Thorough knowledge of industrial safety standards is desired.
This is a full-time position which could be day, afternoon, midnight, rotating shift or relief operator.
