The Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI) supports health services research across the University of Michigan campus.
IHPI’s Data & Methods Hub was created to provide a number of unique support services to help build a vigorous and supportive research community. Examples of these services include:
  • Access to, and management of, valuable data resources
  • Analytic research partnerships via analyst support
  • Research and methodology training and consult
  • Research computing infrastructure and expertise
IHPI’s Data & Methods Hub is seeking a full-time Research Area Specialist Intermediate to assist with the management/coordination of data access, acquisition of data resources, and administrative activities related to the research process.

  • Maintain inventory of data use agreements (DUA), licenses, data media and data resources within the IHPI Data & Methods Hub
  • File and maintain use agreements and contracts for renewals, notifications of changes, tracking of users, and certifications and destruction of data as required
  • Record the initial receipt of data files and load, process, and output data into various file formats and maintain data documentation, including archiving the original media and passwords
  • Triage data requests and inquiries regarding access to IHPI data resources
  • Manage documentation with the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects related to unfunded agreement submissions and associated paperwork
  • Facilitate efficient sharing and distribution of data resources in compliance with DUA restrictions
  • Identify new data resources and research to determine the usefulness/need of the resource
  • Assist in the maintenance of data management plans pertaining to data security and protection of the data in collaboration with University IT
  • Work with campus IT providers and IHPI staff to manage secure file storage and permissions to enable access to appropriate and approved data resources
  • Facilitate access to computing resources used for processing data


Required Qualifications*

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively


Bachelor’s Degree and 4-5 years of experience in a related field.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Familiarity with the content, management, and processing of large administrative or sampled datasets from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and major private payer datasets (i.e. Truven MarketScan, OptumInsight)
  • Experience with research proposal management systems (e.g. UMich eRPM and eResearch)
  • Willingness to learn a statistical software programming language for basic data processing and curation
  • At least 1 year of experience in health services research and basic study design

This position is located at the North Campus Research Complex, Building 16

This position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
