Job Summary

UMHHC Safety Management Services is seeking an ergonomics specialist to develop, implement, promote, and maintain ergonomic injury prevention programs and projects.  The work involves conducting ergonomic assessments for a variety of work areas, including nursing, laboratory, warehouse, housekeeping, and general office. Assisting with the Safe Patient Handling Program. Generating reports, developing and delivering training, and presenting results to managers.

 

NOTE: The successful candidate may be a Associate, Intermediate-or Senior level individual. Final job classification and compensation will be based on the combination of relevant educational qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities*

  • Develop, coordinate and maintain employee ergonomics programs for UMHHC.
  • Support the institutional Safe Patient Handling & Mobility (SPHM) program, including performing risk assessments, identifying interventions, design SPHM elements into the built clinical environment, conduct product evaluations, design and deliver equipment training.
  • Investigate injuries, address staff concerns, determine risk factors, recommend controls, and assist departments in implementing and maintaining corrective actions.
  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct ergonomics education and training programs.
  • Research and develop policies and procedures, standards, and design criteria affecting ergonomics.
  • Provide consultation services and product reviews.
  • Coordinate with related UMHHC and University of Michigan organizations.
  • Review design plans for construction and renovation of hospital facilities for ergonomic concerns.  
  • Serve as an institutional resource on ergonomics topics.

Required Qualifications*

Intermediate Level

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in occupational, safety and health, industrial engineering, or a related technical or scientific field.
  • 2-3 years related experince
  • Excellent knowledge of modern ergonomics principles and practices with emphasis on human factors.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint computer applications.

Associate Level

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in occupational, safety and health, industrial engineering, or a related technical or scientific field.
  • 0-2 years related experince
  • Excellent knowledge of modern ergonomics principles and practices with emphasis on human factors.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint computer applications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands and prioritize work tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently in a quick-paced work environment.
  • Position requires considerable walking, standing, sitting, and moderate lifting.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication abilities.
  • Comfortable speaking to large groups.

Work Schedule

M-F daytime hours, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm, with some flexibility allowed after completing the probationary period. Additional work hours are required during evenings, nights and weekends to respond to institutional needs.
