Responsibilities*

  • Develop, research and write stories about cancer research to promote and distribute to external audiences, including national, local and trade media; referring physicians; internal audiences; peer scientists; patient advocates and others.
  • Assist reporters to place Rogel experts in media stories, including facilitating interviews, photography and other needs, arranging and escorting in-person media or video crews, and protecting patient privacy.
  • Manage and grow the Rogel Twitter account, with an emphasis on facilitating engagement among Rogel faculty, labs and trainees as well as peer scientists and others within the cancer research community.
  • Write and edit content for our award-winning annual research magazine, Illuminate. The candidate will preferably take a leading role in developing a story budget and managing relationships with design and printing vendors.
  • Work with multimedia producer and other team members to develop content for multiple communication channels, including podcasts, videos, blogs, livestreams and social media. Candidate will contribute stories to the Michigan Health Lab blog, www.michiganhealthlab.org, as well as to multiple Rogel and Michigan Medicine social media accounts.
  • Attend major cancer scientific meetings (virtually or in-person as circumstances allow) to promote Rogel presentations and posters
  • Advise faculty on promoting their research, speaking to the media, and building their personal or lab-based Twitter presence.
  • Contribute to efforts around establishing appropriate and consistent style as well as continuous project and process improvements.

Supervision:

The Cancer Communication team is part of the Rogel Cancer Center and integrated with the Michigan Medicine Department of Communication. This position reports to the director of cancer communications.

Required Qualifications*

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field.
  • 5-8 years of combined editing, writing, content creation, digital strategy, or social media experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, proficient in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and familiarity with AP style necessary.
  • Experience working collaboratively to set goals, implement projects and assess success.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work on deadline and handle several projects at once.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience in health or science writing with demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts for multiple audiences.
  • Previous experience in magazine editing or project management is preferred.
