The Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC), housed at the University of Michigan, is seeking a detail-oriented self-starter to join the team in the role of Data Analyst. Strong analytic, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills are critical to this role.

The MVC is a statewide hospital and physician organization consortium, aiming to improve the health of Michigan through sustainable, high-value healthcare and enable Michigan patients to access the right care, at the right cost, at the right time.

The Data Analyst gathers and analyzes data from various databases and other sources; cleans and constructs datasets; performs statistical programming; and provides technical assistance to the team. The Data Analyst will utilize medical claims datasets, among other sources, from both private and federal payers in order to assess payment variation and identify areas of opportunity for hospitals and providers.

In this position, you will work with a highly collaborative group of clinicians, policy experts, statisticians, economists, health services’ researchers, and analysts. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain expertise in data management and analysis, as well as a broad range of healthcare reimbursement and payment reform programs. In addition, you will be able to advance your skills using claims data (including characterizing episodes of care) and have the opportunity to assist with academic publications.

Candidates for this position must be driven, with an intellectual curiosity and desire to continue learning, as well as the ability to work on multiple projects at one time. This position allows for significant growth, with the opportunity to develop statistical methodologic skills and to explore innovative healthcare solutions.

  • Write and edit programs to clean, manage, merge, and analyze data
  • Extract, transform, and merge raw data from various data sources into usable forms, and construct datasets according to the specifications provided
  • Design, create and implement programs and templates to collect, display and analyze data for assigned projects and/or clients
  • Perform statistical programming utilizing SAS and a variety of other statistical software packages to summarize data and create reports and/or visual presentations
  • Design and prepare standard and ad hoc reports
  • Design and prepare summaries for statistical analysis and planning purposes
  • Document procedures for future reference and make recommendations for data analysis process improvements
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of MVC
  • Assist in the implementation of the BCBSM MVC Pay-for-Performance metric
  • Present analytic methods and new approaches to accomplishing goals internally and externally
  • Support the development and publication of academic research papers

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position.
  • Three years of experience in analyzing and interpreting process, clinical outcomes, and costs of care.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with large datasets using statistical software programs (SAS preferred, but STATA, SPSS, and R are also acceptable)

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in relevant field
  • Previous experience working with administrative claims data
  • Working familiarity with basic statistical models and significance testing

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
