Summary

Position Summary:

The Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM) seeks a skilled and highly self-motivated individual to support multiple faculty principal investigators (PIs) in grant funded research projects. Sample projects may include, but are not limited to (prior knowledge or experience in these topic areas is not required):

  • Exploring the views of patients, researchers, and healthcare administrators regarding engaging diverse and underserved communities in big data research to promote health equity
  • An intervention that aims to increase and sustain the number and impact of women in leadership positions in academic medicine
  • An evaluation of a nationwide program to support young faculty members facing caregiving challenges while engaging in clinical research
  • The ethical, legal, and social implications of health data sharing

*Please note this is a term-limited position for 1-2 years with the possibility of extension based on the availability of funds and need. If not renewed at the end of the term, the appointment will not be eligible for Reduction in Force (RIF) benefits. 

*Work location: This position’s responsibilities may be completed remotely or hybrid (mix of in-person and remote) based on operational needs and individual constraints.

Responsibilities*

The Research Specialist will coordinate with the PIs and research teams in planning, implementing, organizing, and reporting project activities. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the Research Specialist will conduct data collection and verification, perform data analysis, and interpret results. This position may entail working on multiple projects with multiple investigators. Responsibilities include:

Project management:

  • Track project aims and progress, comparing it against project timelines and benchmarks to maintain project standards
  • Manage meeting schedules and project timelines for research project teams and take detailed meeting minutes
  • Prepare documents for human subjects approval, including informed consent documents, institutional review board (IRB) applications, amendments and continuing reviews, as well as data use agreements

Data collection & analysis:

  • Oversee, conduct, and lead analysis of qualitative research projects including: development of interview guides, conducting semi-structured interviews, facilitating focus groups, qualitative coding, and thematic analysis
  • Coordinate and conduct data collection activities including screening, recruitment, enrollment, and retention of research participants at health clinics, online, by mail, or phone
  • Develop and pilot-test quantitative survey instruments
  • Administer surveys in person, online, by mail, or phone
  • Coordinate with other institutions and health clinics on research collaborations and data collection
  • Assist with quantitative survey data analysis and interpretation of results

Data management:

  • Develop working protocols, data collection forms, and tracking databases in Qualtrics, REDCap, Excel, and Access
  • Track research participants and maintain timely, accurate, and detailed study records, ensuring compliance with study protocol
  • Oversee and conduct data management tasks such as entering and cleaning data

Financial management:

  • Research, recommend, and purchase equipment, supplies, and services
  • Coordinate the payment of research participants

Dissemination:

  • Assist with the dissemination of results and outreach to the community, partnering organizations, and policy makers
  • Draft, proofread, and edit documents, including manuscripts sections, presentations, and grant progress reports
  • Conduct literature searches and summarize the medical literature on specific topics, as relevant to existing grants and development of new ones
  • Prepare manuscript submissions, revisions, and proofs, ensuring adherence to formatting guidelines
  • Help to ensure submission of manuscripts to PubMed (via NIHMS), as needed, to ensure Public Access Compliance

The ideal candidate will show personal initiative in managing work assignments by organizing, independently prioritizing work, and completing tasks while meeting deadlines. This role requires someone who is responsive on email to accommodate time-sensitive requests from busy faculty/clinician investigators (e.g. quick turnaround on manuscript revisions/proofs, IRB submissions, etc.). The ability to work independently as well as part of a team and regularly exercise sound judgment in the execution of research protocols is a must. We are seeking candidates who fully understand the issues of confidentiality and privacy in the conduct of research. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are required.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a field of social science (e.g. anthropology, psychology, sociology, social work, public health)
  • 4-5 years of human subjects research experience, preferably on federally/foundation funded contracts and/or grants
  • Previous experience or training in qualitative research methods or user-centered design
  • Demonstrated previous experience and proficiency in qualitative interviewing
  • Previous experience or training in social science data collection methods and survey research
  • Previous experience with survey programming in Qualtrics and database creation and management

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in a field of social science (e.g. anthropology, psychology, sociology, social work, public health)
  • Previous experience with behavioral interventions and/or intervention research
  • Previous experience developing, preparing, and submitting grant proposals for consideration by state/federal agencies or private foundations
  • Previous experience co-authoring manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication
  • Previous experience and proficiency using data analysis software for qualitative data (i.e. MaxQDA, NVivo, or Dedoose) and quantitative data (i.e. SAS, Stata, or SPSS)

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
