The Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan is seeking a qualified Learning Experience Designer to work with faculty innovators in the design and development of online learning experiences and propose solutions for complex challenges in online learning environments. The ideal candidate will be a key contributor in expanding the capabilities of CAI to achieve our vision of expanding U-M’s educational offerings, including MOOCs and new online degree programs. This position will report to the Learning Experience Design Lead and also work closely with the Associate Director of Learning Experience Design and the Learning Experience Design team.

About the Learning Experience Design Team

Learning Experience Designers (LXDs) work with faculty innovators and team members at the Center for Academic Innovation to design learner-centered and research-informed learning experiences in online learning spaces. Team members specialize in areas such as accessibility, diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in teaching and learning spaces, applied learning science, emerging technologies for teaching and learning, online pedagogy, assessment design, and learner engagement. In addition to being practitioners, LXDs engage in research that broadly examines the effect of design choice and learning environments on learners, learning experience design practices, and also present their work at national and international conferences.

Design and Development

  • Collaborate with Academic Innovation’s Learning Experience Designers, Design Managers, and Media Designers to design and evaluate high-quality online and hybrid courses

  • Apply a range of design methods and learning theories to learner-centered course design

  • Oversee the development of learner personas for primary and secondary audiences, ensuring that diverse groups of learners are represented

  • Provide course teams and faculty partners with relevant inspirational examples to address technical and pedagogical design challenges

  • Advocate for implementation of accessibility and inclusive design, such as creating materials that are accessible to global learners and learners with disabilities..

  • Create documentation and graphic organizers to guide faculty in creation and refinement of materials and assessments that will become part of the online experience

  • Storyboard activities/animations when multimedia approaches are required

  • Review course design decisions to ensure that activities and resources are appropriately aligned with learning objectives and desired course outcomes

  • Consult on the assessment creation, including multiple-choice quizzes, rubrics, and peer-graded assignments

  • Provide feedback to course design teams on consistency and appropriateness of course content and presentation

  • Characterize the pedagogical design of a course and make research- and evidence-based recommendations for iteration and improvement

Applied Research

  • Interview/survey instructors and learners to understand needs

  • Analyze interview and survey data to inform course improvements and iterations

Capacity Expansion

  • Contribute instructional design expertise by designing and facilitating workshops for faculty and staff

  • Develop design templates, checklists, and guidelines to assist faculty in the design of online learning experiences.

  • Contribute to the advancement of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice goals through collaboration with CAI team members and U-M partners.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, curriculum and instruction, learning sciences, instructional design, educational technology, or information science

  • Demonstrated vision and passion for creating learning experiences that place a high value on diversity, equity, and inclusiveness

  • Solid understanding of learning theories, instructional design methods, and learner-centered design principles

  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-based environment

  • Strong independent judgment, diplomacy, and service-oriented attitude

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Strong problem-solving ability

  • Experience in ensuring learning experience designs takes learner needs, accessibility standards, and underlying technology into consideration

  • Experience exploring creative solutions to ensure course materials for all learners are accessible, to the greatest extent possible

  • Experience designing and developing online learning experiences for online education platforms (e.g., Canvas, Coursera, and edX)

  • Strong ability to develop asynchronous online learning activities and assessments

  • Skilled in communicating to diverse learner audiences through a variety of modalities

Additional Information

Please Note: This is a 3 year term limited position with the possibility of renewal depending on funding.

This is not a remote position and any adjustments to a standard in-person schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidate’s education and experience.
