What You Will Do

The Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan is seeking an experienced, innovative, and collaborative Director of Content and Platform Strategy. In this role, you will report to the Senior Director for Online Learning and will work closely with team members in the Center for Academic Innovation as well as partners in academic units across U-M’s campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. You will be responsible for strategic direction setting for expansion of U-M’s portfolio of online learning experiences, as well as leading strategy regarding adoption, development, implementation, and use of online learning platforms and partnerships. You will lead vital aspects of the Center’s work to expand U-M’s educational reach and impact, advance innovative teaching, and support greater access and lifelong learning.

About Online Learning at CAI

The Online Learning group within CAI consists of five teams that collaborate with others across the Center and University to design and develop online learning experiences that support the future of education for a global community. We work with faculty and academic unit leaders to envision how they can expand reach and impact, advance innovative teaching, and support greater access and lifelong learning through the design and development of integrated online learning experiences. Our teams focus on the following areas:

  • Strategic sourcing of new opportunities for online learning;
  • Developing internal and external partnerships that promote engagement with learning experiences;
  • Providing program management services throughout degree program development and operations;
  • Supporting end-to-end design and development of online learning experiences, including design management, learning experience design, and iteration of learning experiences after they have launched;
  • Supporting learners’ success and engagement in live courses and programs.

Responsibilities

Content Strategy

  • Establishes a data-informed content strategy to support growth of non-credit and credit bearing content across online and hybrid learning product offerings that balances goals of the Center, academic units, and the University through collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
  • Works closely with the Senior Director for Online Learning to provide leadership and vision for the Center’s online learning domain.
  • Provide direction and oversight for the Center’s Partnership Development team.
  • Determines an optimal mix of product offerings to meet a broad range of learning, business, mission, brand, and marketing needs.
  • Maintains an informed current understanding of the digital learning credential landscape including trends in non-credit, alternative credential, and online and hybrid degree programming relevant to U-M’s online learning strategy, and engages in efforts to share knowledge and shape the landscape where appropriate.
  • Collaborates with the Center’s Online Learning, Marketing and Communications, and Research and Analytics teams to analyze the online learning portfolio’s alignment with diverse learner needs and labor market demand to identify key areas of opportunity.
  • Establishes and guides a sourcing framework that attracts and supports the needs of academic unit leadership and diverse faculty experts in order to highlight strengths across U-M’s academic units.
  • Designs and facilitates conversations and working sessions with academic unit leadership and faculty experts to generate new innovative content and product opportunities in the online and hybrid learning space.
  • Supports operational sustainability by collaborating with the Center’s Operations and Marketing and Communications team to develop pricing models that balance access and affordability with revenue generation opportunities to address development and operational costs across learning experience offerings.

Platform Strategy

  • Maintains an informed current understanding of the educational technology landscape, including platforms, tools, and services relevant to U-M’s online learning strategy.
  • Performs build/buy/partner analyses to identify the optimal mix of internal and external solutions for capacity and capability-building within the institution to meet online learning goals of the Center, academic units, and the University.
  • Develops and maintains strategic vision regarding development of Michigan Online and Michigan Online Global Classroom, U-M’s internally developed virtual campus platform.
  • Establishes a strategic plan for expanding the products, support, and services necessary for Michigan Online and Michigan Online Global Classroom to achieve desired online offering growth and promote excellence in the learner and innovator experience.
  • Collaborates with the Center’s Educational Technology, Marketing and Communications, Research and Analytics, and Policy and Operations teams to establish direction for internal platform development, marketing and promotional strategies, and relevant regulatory compliance monitoring and policy development necessary to support success of learning experiences.
  • Provides oversight for critical partner relationships with external platform, technology, and service providers, where necessary.
  • Analyzes performance of existing platforms and partnerships, leading discussions regarding improvement of services or platform capabilities with external partners where necessary to support internal stakeholder goal-attainment and success.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 7+ years of experience in an online learning field including time in a strategic leadership and managerial role
  • 3+ years supervising professional staff and managing budgets
  • In-depth knowledge of the for-credit and non-credit online learning landscape, including short-form content, massive open online course (MOOC) offerings, non-credit to credit pathways, and hybrid and fully online degree programs.
  • Experience managing relationships with educational technology and/or OPM partnerships; expertise working with partners such as Coursera and edX is desired.
  • Applied experience implementing a strategic vision for growing online learning offerings
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to design and facilitate conversations with diverse stakeholders engaging with innovative concepts and ideas.
  • Experience in a complex organization building partnerships with diverse groups of individuals, gaining their support and commitment
  • Functional expertise related to the evaluation, assessment, and recommendation of educational technology-related products and systems
  • Passion for diversity, equity and inclusion in a workplace environment.

Salary Information

The general salary range for this position is $130,000 - $145,000. Candidates can expect to be paid a competitive and equitable salary. Factors used to determine salary include experience, knowledge and skills for the position and internal equity within the unit. All candidates are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor alignment and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
