Summary

The ADVANCE Program uses data to understand the faculty experience within a complex organization. ADVANCE seeks insights grounded in evidence-based research to inform policy and practices at the University of Michigan. 

The ADVANCE Research and Evaluation (R&E) team serves the University of Michigan through various research projects and provides evaluation support. A project management mindset is important in this role to ensure deliverables are on time, of high quality, and safeguard confidentiality. You will report to the Director of Research and Evaluation and be part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary group that takes a team-based approach to applied research. 

The R&E team works on various projects to produce actionable data -- often with policy implications. The team also works on various standing projects, including climate assessments, an annual snapshot of faculty, salary analyses, faculty exit interviews, and supporting the programmatic and administrative teams in ADVANCE.  More information on recent R&E projects and our recent reports can be found at http://advance.umich.edu/research.

We seek a research and evaluation specialist to join the team, ideally at the intermediate level, though we would also consider a candidate at the associate level.

Who We Are

For 20 years, the ADVANCE Program has pioneered research and programming aimed at improving faculty diversity, equity, and inclusion. Beginning in 2002 with an ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant from the National Science Foundation and transitioning to Provost’s Office funding in 2007, the nationally recognized program serves all U-M faculty on campus in four distinct areas:

  • Recruitment - development, and use of equitable recruiting practices
  • Workplace Climate - focused on the improvement of unit climate
  • Retention - preemptive strategies to prevent the loss of valued faculty
  • Leadership Development - skill and career development for faculty leaders at all levels

Responsibilities*

At the intermediate level, in addition to associate level responsibilities, you will also:

  • Manage all aspects of broad programmatic data, including survey design and distribution, data collection, analysis, and report development
  • Design research studies, surveys, and evaluations.
  • Use contemporary data management (e.g., maintain tidy data), research methodologies, data visualization, and reporting techniques. 
  • Design qualitative protocols, facilitating focus groups, conduct interviews, code data, and generate reports
  • Use data to report findings that inform programs, recommendations, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Oversee multiple projects including planning resources to meet timelines
  • Train and mentor colleagues and student employees

At the associate level, you will primarily:

  • Assist with research and evaluation projects, including coding and tabling
  • Create, distribute and manage online surveys in Qualtrics
  • Follow instructions or guidelines to complete assignments accurately with attention to detail
  • Perform systematic review to ensure accuracy of data and reports, including reviewing syntax as well as cross-checking output, tables, figures and reports

Required Qualifications*

At the intermediate level you will have:

  • Master's degree in a social science discipline, data science or equivalent combination of applied education and experience
  • 2 years of experience with quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis and reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to summarize findings and to extract themes from quantitative and qualitative data (e.g., writing summary reports)
  • Intermediate level proficiency in SPSS or other statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, R, Stata, Python)
  • Experience working on a highly collaborative team (e.g., research laboratory group)
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and keen attention to detail 

At the associate level you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a social science discipline, data science or equivalent combination of applied education and experience
  • Two statistics courses including descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, and summarizing findings
  • Some experience in SPSS or other statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, R, Stata, Python)
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Previous work experience in an office environment including demonstrated attention to detail

Desired Qualifications*

At the intermediate level it would be a plus if you also had any of the following:

  • Ph.D. degree in a social science discipline, data science or equivalent combination of applied education and experience
  • 2 years of experience with applied project management
  • Familiar with data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, R)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Google Collaboration software
  • Interest in issues of data equity, critical approach to data visualization, and data in context
  • Well-developed time management, multi-tasking and prioritization skills
  • Some experience analyzing policies and using research findings to inform policies within post-secondary educational institutions
  • Some experience building interactive dashboards
  • Experience working in a faculty-driven research environment with complex, institutional data for a higher education organization that is similar to the University of Michigan
  • Previous experience mentoring students

At the associate level it would be a plus if you also had any of the following:

  • Master's degree in a social science discipline, data science or equivalent combination of applied education and experience
  • Some experience with quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis and reporting (e.g., writing abstracts, annotated bibliography)
  • Demonstrated ability to extract themes from source data
  • Experience working on a highly collaborative team (e.g., research laboratory group)
  • Commitment to building a supportive work culture and a positive work environment

Work Schedule

The ADVANCE Program embraces a hybrid work model -- with a minimum of three days on campus for full-time staff appointments. Staff are welcome to work additional days in the office. We offer a flexible start time between 7:00 am and 9:30 am, so staff is available between the core hours of 9:30 am and 3:30 pm to support internal and campus collaboration, learning, brainstorming, and teamwork. The position requires the frequent use of a laptop computer and working in a standard office space.

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the selected candidate.

Additional Information

The minimum starting salary is $60,000. At the Associate level, the minimum starting salary is $40,000.   The final salary will be based on several factors, such as the selected candidate’s experience, knowledge, and skills for the position.
