Course Description
AAS 322/ ENVIRON 335 - INTRODUCTION TO ENVIRONMENT POLITICS: RACE, CLASS, AND GENDER.
This course introduces students to global environmental politics, justice and development. This course will explore environmental issues around the world and the relatedness of nature to politics, development and culture. We will address historically unique social form that presents special challenges to our understanding of environmental politics, gender, race and culture by looking at case studies from around the world.
Among the questions that we will examine are the following: How have local and global histories, memories, practices, values, gender, race and identities that derive from our understanding of politics intersect with nature? Are there environmental issues that are also issues of race, class and gender? For example, are there particular forms of knowledge and subjectivity that intersect or interact with race and gender difference, or ideas about civilization and primitivity that could be seen as distinctive instruments of environmental rule?
Responsibilities*
The GSI appointed to this position is expected to attend all lectures and all of her/his assigned discussion sections; be at lectures on time; attend and be prepared for weekly planning meetings (complete the readings and have plans/ideas regarding how to run discussion sections); complete tasks assigned by instructor on time. The GSI is responsible for grading all assignments and examinations and she/he bears the primary responsibility for computing final grades. Grading must be completed in a timely fashion. The GSI is expected to provide feedback to students. The GSI must post regular weekly office hours and she/he is expected to be at the location specified for office hours on time and for the duration of office hours. If the GSI has to set up equipment, etc. for lectures, she/he is expected to accomplish what is necessary early enough to assure that lectures/discussions can begin on time. The GSI is expected to keep attendance records for the class and a careful record of students grades. All GSIs must be ready to assume their responsibilities in the course beginning August 28, 2023.
Appointment Period: Fall Term 2023
Estimated FTE: Three positions with .50 fraction. The GSI is responsible for attending class and leading discussion groups in class with enrollment limits of 25 per section.
Required Qualifications*
Familiarity with and course work at the graduate level dealing with the general subject matter of the course are considered very important, as is evidence of effective teaching and the ability to work well with students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
AAS 322 is designated an Upper Level Writing Requirement (ULWR) course, which carries the requirement that a ULWR GSI must either take WRITING 993 concurrently or have already taken it previously. Only two sections of this course are offered every fall and winter term on Tuesday from 4-5 pm and Wednesday 9-10 am. Sessions begin the second week of classes.
To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours. With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable.
Desired Qualifications*
LSA student enrolled in a graduate program. Prior teaching experience is preferred but not required.

Decision Making Process
A GSI for AAS 322/ ENVIRON 335 will be selected by the DAAS faculty member teaching the class, and final approval will come from the DAAS Administrative Team.
