What You'll Do

The Center for Academic Innovation at the University of Michigan is looking for a qualified Learning Experience Designer to work with the development and iterations of online and hybrid degree and credit-bearing programs. You will help academic units to ensure alignment and documentation of course-level learning objectives to program-level outcomes and develop and support new and existing online degree programs. You will report to the Program Operations Design Lead and also work with the Director of Blended and Online Learning Experience Design and Program Management.

About the Program Operations Design Team 

The Program Operations design team supports the iteration of program and course designs for online and hybrid degree programs at U-M, and a range of ongoing activities related to the operation of existing programs. We work with faculty and academic unit leaders to envision how they can expand reach and impact, promote innovative teaching, and support greater access and lifelong learning through the design, and iteration of integrated online learning experiences.

Online Course Design 

  • Lead course design processes with a focus on pedagogical approaches that result in engaging online learning experiences by advocating for learner-centered instructional strategies, and aligning learning outcomes with activities and assessments to ensure continuity between outcomes, course content, and design goals 
  • Implement inclusive design approaches, considering diverse audiences of learners, and foregrounding issues of equity and accessibility throughout the design process 
  • Provide course design recommendations that integrate professional expertise with a research and data-informed approach by curating sample course designs to showcase the range of options available to faculty and design teams 
  • Collaborate with learning experience designers, design managers, media designers, and faculty partners to design, iterate, and evaluate high-quality online courses 
  • Apply a range of design methods and learning theories to the design of learner-centered courses and experiences 
  • Oversee the development of learner personas for primary and secondary audiences, ensuring that diverse groups of learners are represented 
  • Provide course teams and faculty collaborators with relevant and inspirational examples that can serve to spark ideas and promote creative solutions 
  • Propose solutions to pedagogical design challenges through the thoughtful integration of educational technologies 
  • Review course design decisions to ensure that activities, media, and resources are aligned with targeted learning goals and desired course outcomes 
  • Provide consultation on assessment creation, including multiple-choice quizzes, rubrics, and peer-graded assignments 
  • Evaluate the efficacy of course designs to make research- and evidence-based recommendations for iteration and improvement 
  • Provide formal mentorship and professional modeling for student fellows and residents through leadership and supervision on internal and external projects.

Online Program Design and Evaluation

  • Collaborate with academic unit and CAI stakeholders to ensure alignment and documentation of course-level learning objectives to program-level outcomes, including ensuring alignment of capstone courses to prerequisite courses 
  • Support academic unit's evaluation of needs for program-wide consistency and recommend course design templates and quality assurance processes as warranted 
  • Collaborate with program leadership and faculty support staff to develop program-wide strategies to support faculty in assessment, communication and facilitation strategies of online programs. 
  • Implement development of post-launch optimization processes from a program design perspective, with input of students and faculty 
  • Evaluate online course and program design to make continuous improvement recommendations to academic units 
  • Collaborate with program leadership to assess the sustainability of course designs to ensure adequate support and resources are available within the academic unit to iterate content following recommended guidelines 
  • Create opportunities for community engagement around shared problems of interest around online program design and implementation 
  • Collaborate with academic units and CAI content strategy leaders to identify appropriate content for use and reuse across open and for-credit courses.

Process Development and Management

  • Maintain high-level view and specialized knowledge of online and hybrid programs to be able to provide stakeholders with relevant pedagogical specifications, detailed documentation, and considerations around student effort and assessment 
  • Create and maintain design instruments for online and hybrid programs to ensure pedagogical consistency among courses in a program through the development of content templates, workflows, and program level expectations 
  • Collaborate with varying stakeholder groups to develop and maintain effective design processes and communication flows that support development of online courses and programs 
  • Create opportunities for team members to provide feedback on new ideas and directions and respond thoughtfully and productively to feedback requests of others 
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement of processes through evaluation and iteration of processes 
  • Support development of standalone resources that promote program design decisions for units developing new online and hybrid programs across the institution 
  • Ensure that work processes, and business practices follow the Center's commitment to DEIJ efforts

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in education, curriculum and instruction, learning sciences, instructional design, educational technology, or information science 
  • 5+ years of experience (or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience) 
  •  Demonstrated vision and experience with creating learning experiences that place a high value on diversity, equity, and inclusiveness 
  • Experienced working on projects involving programmatic curricular design and course-level design 
  • Working knowledge of standards for online for-credit course design, including copyright and accessibility 
  • Understanding of integrating learning theories, instructional design methods, and learner-centered design principles 
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying a learner-centered approach to course design 
  • Demonstrated expertise in assessing project outcomes and making recommendations for improvement and iteration 
  • Experience working in curriculum design teams in higher education settings 
  • Experience using online education platforms (e.g., Canvas, Coursera, and edX) 
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment 
  • Demonstrated initiative, independent judgment, diplomacy, and customer service-oriented attitude 
  • Demonstrated organizational, and written communication skills 
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability

Please Note: This is a 5 year term limited position with the possibility of renewal depending on funding. 

This is not a remote position and any adjustments to a standard in-person schedule will be discussed during the hiring process. 

The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidate's education and experience.

Salary Information - The general salary range for this position is $60,000 - $80,000. You can expect to be paid a great compensation package. Factors used to determine salary include education level and experience for the position and internal equity within the unit. You are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor alignment and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
