Summary
University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to perform cutting edge research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) to benefit real world large-scale transportation projects. UMTRI is well-known in the transportation community for quality-driven interdisciplinary applied research in the transportation domain. As part of this position, the applicant will engage with the Engineering Systems Group (ESG) to develop robust and accurate methodology for object detection, tracking and fusion problems with a view towards specific problems arising in AI/ML such as uncertainty quantification, domain adaptation and out-of-distribution among various others. The applicant will work closely with the Research Faculty, Research Staff and Students in working on funded projects within the group and having collaborations within the institute. The position seeks applicants with a track record of impactful publications. A special focus will be placed on previous collaborative research.
What You'll Do
- Perform research to advance the science and technology of object detection, tracking and fusion pipeline in real world sensor data.
- Collaborate with your faculty supervisor and other researchers to discuss, develop and implement research agenda.
- Write and debug high-quality research code and research papers.
- Design and implement experiments to test research ideas on a variety of problems.
- Publish research at conferences and journals.

Required Qualifications*
- Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or a similar field. (Degree must be completed prior to joining UMTRI.)
- Experienced with implementing object detection frameworks.
- Research background in Machine Learning, or similar field.
- Experience solving analytical problems using analytic and quantitative approaches.
- Demonstrated experience communicating research to audiences with different backgrounds.
- Experience coding in C/C++, Python, C#, or other similar languages.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience in working with sensor data such as cameras, LiDARs and radars.
- Experience having first-authored publications at peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
- Research and engineering experience demonstrated via grants, fellowships, patents, internships, work experience, and/or coding competitions.
- Experience solving complex problems and comparing alternative solutions, trade-offs, and diverse points of view to determine a path forward.
- Experience communicating research for public audiences of peers.
- Experience working and communicating cross functionally in a team environment.
Additional Information
The Research Fellow position is for a one-year, renewable appointment dependent upon performance and funding.
A higher salary may be considered for an extraordinarily qualified candidate.
