Summary
The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) at the University of Michigan invites applications for an open rank faculty position in any research area. Research areas of particular interest include chemical biology/biocatalysis, cancer biology, natural product sciences, structure-based drug design, and correlative light and electron microscopy/cryo-electron tomography (CLEM/Cryo-ET). Individuals from groups historically under-represented in the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
The LSI is a multidisciplinary research institute dedicated to fundamental discovery in the biological sciences in a state-of-the-art collaborative physical space. Through basic discovery science, the institute seeks to advance knowledge in critical areas of biology with a goal of contributing to understanding of human health and disease, including cancer, metabolic disorders, brain disorders, and infectious disease.
Faculty hold both an appointment as a Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor in the LSI and a tenure-track Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor appointment in one of the university's schools and colleges. Joint appointments are likely in the U-M Medical School; College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; College of Engineering; School of Public Health; School of Dentistry; or College of Pharmacy.
All faculty are expected to develop an internationally recognized program of scholarly research, excel in teaching and mentoring at the graduate level, and participate in service in the university and broader research community. The LSI is committed to the following principles, described in the LSI's Statement of Community Values: Integrity, Collaboration and Cooperation, Safety, and Respect. All members of the LSI community attest to and are held to these standards.
The LSI is currently home to 26 faculty members in the disciplines of cell biology, physiology, genetics, chemical biology, structural biology, and neurobiology, including two Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators, four members of the National Academies of Sciences and/or Medicine, and four members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Our culture is founded on upholding scientific excellence, embracing risk, and collaborating across disciplines to achieve an impact greater than the sum of our individual parts.
Along with faculty labs, the institute houses state-of-the-art core laboratories, including high-throughput screening with extensive chemical collections and a unique library of natural product extracts, a comprehensive protein production and X-ray crystallography facility, a natural products discovery core, and a cryo-electron microscopy facility. The LSI is also home to a U-M graduate program in chemical biology.
