Summary
The Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics (DCMB) at the University of Michigan Medical School is launching a joint faculty search with the Institute for Heart and Brain Health (IHBH) for a new tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
DCMB provides a vibrant environment for research and education and has a strong tradition of multidisciplinary collaboration. DCMB has 20 Primary, 15 Joint, and 8 Research faculty, with >120 Affiliate faculty in its Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (CCMB). DCMB hosts NIGMS Biomedical Informatics and Data Science and NCI Proteome Informatics pre-doctoral T32 training programs and is currently home to >90 PhD and >100 Master students, with >140 PhD alumni. Our department is growing rapidly, with ~15-fold increase in NIH funding during the past 10 years (currently #4 NIH ranking) and continues to build a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and trainees.
The University of Michigan Medical School recently established the Institute for Heart and Brain Health (IHBH) to help catalyze collaborative interactions among cardiovascular and neuroscience researchers. The institute's mission is to understand the concordant patterns in vulnerability and protection between the heart and brain, identify shared pathways and mechanisms of crosstalk, and leverage these insights for basic mechanistic understanding and therapeutic benefit.
DCMB and IHBH seek an outstanding faculty member who will bring or establish an independent research program that uses translational bioinformatics and/or biomedical data science approaches to address important questions in neurosciences and/or cardiovascular research. Approaches that integrate large datasets to identify common biological pathways and/or mechanisms of crosstalk are of particular interest. However, computational scientists focused on either area but interested in cross-disciplinary collaboration are also encouraged to apply. Innovative research may be in any relevant area of bioinformatics, computational biology, or data science, with applications to biomedical, clinical, or public health research in HBH. Candidates with a focus on quantitative aspects of health disparities research are strongly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities*
Candidates are expected to develop an internationally-recognized program of scholarly research, to excel in teaching and mentoring at the graduate level, and to demonstrate commitment to service in the department and scientific community.
Required Qualifications*
Qualifications include a Ph.D. and/or M.D., an outstanding record of research accomplishments, and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion in the biomedical sciences.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
