Job Summary

The Executive Director of Facilities and Operations, U-M Health (Executive Director) is an executive-level administrative position at University of Michigan Health (UMH), with responsibility for the development of long-range objectives and policies for facilities planning and operations including architecture, engineering, construction, utilities, maintenance, systems monitoring, equipment planning, clinical engineering, space planning, healthcare facility accreditation and regulatory compliance, quality improvement, arts programs and environmental health and safety.


Organizational Scope


The Executive Director's scope of responsibility spans across approximately 8 million square feet of clinical and administrative facilities within the academic medical center, located in Ann Arbor and surrounding southeast Michigan communities.  The Executive Director is also responsible for team coordination and collaboration with peers at regional healthcare sites of UMH.

Responsibilities*

  • Executive leader of Facilities for all UMH Clinical and Administrative buildings. (8 million gross square feet-70+facilities) for the academic medical center
  • Produce and manage annual operating budgets for Facilities Planning and Operations ($70+M)
  • Chair of the Building Committee for Capital Oversight Group for UMH Routine capital planning
  • Chair of the Environment of Care committee for Joint Commission accreditation
  • Liaison to UM leaders of central campus facility planning and project management support functions led by UM Architecture, Engineering and Construction 
  • Provide executive oversight of facilities and equipment project planning and cost estimation for all capital projects, including annual capital and 3-5-year strategic plans.
  • Provide oversight of the development of high-level cash flows for use in the UMH strategic financial framework.
  • Coordinate with internal and external safety and regulatory agencies to ensure continuous compliance and safe environments for care and work.
  • Oversight of all Environment of Care, Fire, Safety and regulatory inspections and compliance with Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Coordinate project documentation for Certificate of Need and UMH Governance requirements
  • Administer vendor service agreements in direct support of facilities operations.
  • Provide fiscal oversight of all capital projects undertaken by UMH.
  • Interface with regulatory officials as necessary to resolve issues and concerns regarding facility design and code compliance.
  • Responsible for the overall management and tracking of Facility Conditions Indices for all UMH clinical facilities of the academic medical center.
  • Serve as Facilities consultant and expert for various internal and external leadership forums
  • Collaborate on routine basis with leadership responsible for Medical School Facilities Planning and Operations, Parking and Transportation and Security Services.
  • Responsible for overall wayfinding program for UMH.
  • Responsible for oversight and achievement of internal sustainability/carbon neutrality goals and objectives, and accomplishment of certification via external agencies (e.g. LEED)
  • Maintain accountability for all aspects of people management which include recruitment and selection, counseling, disciplinary processes, contract management, coaching and mentoring.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within a healthcare setting.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare facility regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and project management.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and resources effectively.
  • A commitment to patient safety and the highest standards of healthcare facility management.
  • Strong project management skills and experience with capital project planning and execution.
  • Professional certifications in facilities management or related fields (e.g., CFM, CHFM, LEED) is a plus.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
