University Health Service (UHS) provides a scope of health and wellness care to University of Michigan students, as well as primary care services for eligible UM faculty and staff. UHS is actively seeing compassionate, enthusiastic and patient-focused individuals to join our campus team. This position is conveniently located on campus near downtown Ann Arbor and minutes from the main hospital.
Job Summary
As a Medical Assistant (MA) for University Health Services, you will have the unique opportunity to provide care for U of M students, faculty, and staff. Not only will you have the ability to showcase your skills as a MA, you will also have an opportunity to build strong relationships with Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers. You will play an integral role within the University, and specifically within UHS. MAs are frontline in providing the highest quality care for students and other UM affiliated patients. Responsibilities*
Patient Care 80%
- Room patients and completing intake, including medication reconciliation and screening forms
- Perform ear irrigations, suture/staple removal, EKGs, casting/splinting, ankle taping, urine drug screens and other point of care testing
- Assist clinicians in the delivery of direct care and support operational functions including procedures
- Act as chaperone during sensitive exams, diagnostic and therapeutic treatments
- Provide routine patient prep instructions for some UHS procedures
- Observe patient status, report changes, and document accordingly
- Perform quality control/assurance for CLIA waived testing
- Open and close clinic according to UHS guidelines
- Problem-solve patient flow issues
- Use infection prevention guidelines for patient rooms and equipment
- Disinfect and maintain medical equipment
- Administer injections appropriate to clinic protocols or by defined orders in the EMR, including, but not limited to immunizations
- Clean, stock, organize patient care areas
- Nasopharyngeal Covid swabbing
- Mid Turbinate Covid swabbing, including educating and observing patient self collecting
Administrative 10%
- Prepare and/or place orders for patient care supplies
- Prepare medical instruments for transport for high level disinfection
- May contact patients and arrange for appropriate testing, referrals, or follow-up
Other Duties as Assigned 10%
- Participate in Quality Improvement activities
- May prepare and/or present ideas or explain workflow changes at team meetings
- Various other duties deemed clinically appropriate and within the scope of practice designated by clinical staff and/or supervisor/designee
- Reinforce instruction for patients and families according to the teaching plan established by a clinician
Required Qualifications*
- High school diploma or GED
- 0 - 5 years experience of working as a Medical Assistant and/or related experience performing as a Certified Nurse assistant or Direct Care Worker
Desired Qualifications*
- Graduated from an Accredited Medical Assistant Program
- Ambulatory Care setting experience within the last 2-3 years
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) Certification
- Previous experience with MiChart (EPIC)
- Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) training
- Bi-lingual or multi-lingual skills

Underfill Statement
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. This position will be filled at the Medical Assistant salary range of $35,250 - $37,650 as the primary goal. The requirements listed below reflect the Medical Assistant expectation. However, those with more experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the primary goal is met. More experienced candidates will be reviewed at the Medical Assistant Associate salary range of $38,700- $41,400.

Work Schedule
- This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position. Available to work 8 hour shifts between 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Routine schedule will be 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM on weekdays, plus rotating coverage for closing (stay until the last patient departs). Must be able to work occasional overtime, based on patient care needs. Standards of practice for patient services offered by staff within this job family, have the potential to include care offered via telehealth.

Physical requirements
- Able to maintain a static position for extended periods of time, and move and transport objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Training
- Orientation and pre-cepting will occur within and perhaps including outside of our department, by experienced staff and tenured Medical Assistants.
