Summary

The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan is seeking nominations and applications for senior-level tenured (professor or associate professor) faculty with outstanding research programs in any area of Kinesiology to join our growing school. Several positions are available including the school's only named endowed faculty position. The endowment from this position will be used to support salary and provide supplemental research funding.

The University of Michigan is one of the highest ranked public universities in the nation and one of the world's preeminent research institutions. The School of Kinesiology is one of 19 independent academic units and one of seven health science schools and colleges within the university. In fall 2020 and again in fall 2023, the National Academy of Kinesiology ranked the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology as the #1 Kinesiology program in the U.S. The school is led by Dean Lori Ploutz-Snyder , has 35 tenure-line faculty and approximately 1200 students. The school is home to some of the country's top academic programs focusing on applied exercise science, athletic training, movement science, and sport management.

In addition to the many exciting opportunities within the School of Kinesiology, faculty, staff, and students have a strong record of successfully partnering with other academic units within the university - consistent with the culture of the University of Michigan that highly values collaboration and innovation across disciplines. Candidates for these open faculty positions will be expected to maintain a robust, ongoing research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and have research expertise appropriate for the effective mentoring of trainees at the undergraduate, master's, doctoral and post-doctoral levels. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain extramural funding for an active research program at the University of Michigan at a level consistent with their research area.

Candidates for the endowed chair position would ideally demonstrate the following additional attributes: the capacity to represent the School of Kinesiology across campus and beyond in a positive, professional, and collaborative manner; leadership in facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations; and an ability to work or collaborate across programs in the school or in other units in novel ways.

In winter 2021, the school moved into a newly renovated, state-of-the-art academic and research building ( Kinesiology Building ) that is located in the heart of the University of Michigan's main campus. The $120M renovation project expands the School of Kinesiology's research, classroom, and office space to approximately 189,000 gross sq. ft. The research space includes a 9,800 sq. ft. biomechanics research suite, a 9,000 sq. ft. wet lab research suite, a 5,000 sq. ft. neuro research center, a 1,700 sq. ft. vivarium, and a 3,500 sq. ft. clinical testing suite and exercise research center. In addition, new faculty will have access to the state-of-the-art core computing and laboratory facilities at the University of Michigan.

Required Qualifications*

We have an interest in candidates whose research program enhances the existing strengths and builds new collaborations related to the interdisciplinary study of exercise, movement and/or sport. The successful candidates must have a doctoral degree in a related field, along with an outstanding record of performing cutting-edge research and producing high quality/high impact publications. Candidates should also demonstrate a consistent and ongoing record of securing research funding consistent with the expectations of the subdiscipline, as well as experience and skill in providing leadership that will advance the scholarly excellence of the Applied Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Movement Science or Sport Management Program in the School of Kinesiology. Proven success with contributing to a positive workplace culture, and ability to consistently demonstrate our school's core values is necessary.
