Summary

The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan invites applications for a new faculty position of clinical assistant professor (non-tenure track). The preferred start date for this position is June or August  2024. This position is a 75% teaching and 25% administrative/service/scholarship position. The typical teaching load includes three courses per fall and winter semester, and two courses in the spring/summer for a 12-month appointment.  Teaching responsibilities will be split between the undergraduate Movement Science program and the graduate Athletic Training program in the School of Kinesiology. Within the Athletic Training program, the successful candidate will be expected to teach the Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries lecture and lab, and Special Topics in Athletic Training or other courses based on the candidate's area of expertise. Within the Movement Science program, possible teaching responsibilities will include one or more courses from among Biological and Behavioral Basis of Human Movement, Human Musculoskeletal Anatomy, Scientific Writing, Statistics, Movement Neuroscience, or other courses based on the candidate's area of expertise. Administrative responsibilities will be based on the programs' needs and the expertise and prior experience of the candidate; some examples include: curriculum development, contribution to new academic courses or programs, establishing internship and clinical rotation experiences for students, inclusive teaching initiatives, and collaborative research and scholarship. Engagement in professional scholarship and participation in departmental, university, and/or community service is expected. The selected candidate will advise and counsel Kinesiology students, attend and participate in faculty meetings, and participate in curricular developmental committees and other Kinesiology committees. A competitive salary will be offered, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.


The School of Kinesiology is one of 19 independent academic units and one of seven health science schools and colleges within the University of Michigan. The school is led by Dean Lori Ploutz-Snyder and has 35 tenure-line faculty, 13 clinical faculty, 23 lecturers, and over 1200 students. In 2021, the School of Kinesiology relocated to a completely renovated building with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities in the heart of the University of Michigan Central Campus. The new building includes state-of-the-art facilities to support clinical exercise physiology teaching and research. This includes dedicated lecture and laboratory classrooms, a clinical exercise physiology research laboratory, along with many other research laboratories and centers.

Required Qualifications*

Ph.D. preferred, master's degree considered, in kinesiology or a related field. While a doctoral degree is preferred, master's degree-holding candidates with a particularly strong clinical background are also encouraged to apply. The candidate must have a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) credential to be considered. Two or more years of teaching in higher education is highly desirable.
