To perform a variety of routine or specialized tests and procedures for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of patients in one or more areas of work, such as Clinical Core Laboratory, Transfusion Medicine, Histocompatibility, Flow Cytometry, Molecular Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, Point of Care, Microbiology and other specialty departments.

  • Perform duties inclusive of an LT (Laboratory Technician).
  • Perform high complexity testing without direct supervision.
  • Process incoming samples by ensuring correct labeling, computer log-in, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage.
  • Perform and record routine instrument maintenance procedures.
  • Analyze and record quality control materials with documentation of action on out-of-range values.
  • Accurately analyze patient specimens on instruments and/or by specified manual methodologies within specified turnaround times.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols.
  • Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
  • Monitor instrument error codes, troubleshoot and correct problems as necessary.
  • Accurately transcribe patient data from instrument printouts or worksheets into computer record including any pertinent sample description comments.
  • Perform analysis on data output from instruments, and create preliminary reports.
  • Maintain a safe work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.
  • Instruct, train, and observe medical technology students, new employees, and pathology residents in bench procedures and theory.
  •  Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section on a temporary basis as delegated.
  • Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.
  • To reliably perform daily work in the molecular microbiology area.
  • To reliably perform and record quality control, instrument maintenance, and environmental samples according to molecular procedures.
  • To communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other hospital professionals regarding molecular testing results, and understand responsibilities for critical notifications and reportable pathogens.
  • To maintain a safe and organized work environment at all times.
  • To work collaboratively with dedicated molecular teammates and support the goals of the molecular leadership, laboratory supervisors, lab manager and directors.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment. 

  • Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Science or other biological science.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist by BOC or eligibility for certification at the time of hire.
  • Specialized laboratories may accept a Bachelor degree in a biological science with certification eligibility specific to that laboratory.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory.
  • Molecular microbiology experience in both technique and theory
  • Communications skills, interpersonal, written and spoken
  • Experience with pipetting, PCR assay techniques and instrumentation in the molecular areas.

Work Schedule

This part time, 30 hour position is on the night shift, the schedule will include rotating weekends and holidays.

Additional Information


  • Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
  • May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system.
  • May participate in a rotating weekend, holiday and on call work schedule.
  • Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting/hand pipetting) for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to _lbs.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
