Department Summary

The University of Michigan (UM) University Health and Counseling (UHC), a unit within Student Life, is a large ambulatory, multi-specialty health clinic and counseling center that serves a large and diverse student body of more than 50,000 students. UHC provides culturally competent clinical services throughout its primary care clinic, specialty clinics, and counseling center.

The UHC Psychiatry Clinic is a highly collaborative service-working closely with Michigan Medicine, Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), Dean of Students (DOS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and area hospitals that treats UM undergraduate and graduate students. Mental health concerns are first evaluated by Primary Care Physicians, Care Managers, or CAPS counselors, who refer students with complex and acute needs to the UHC Psychiatry Clinic. Common concerns include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, psychosis, substance use disorders, ADHD, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Job Summary

UHC is seeking candidates to fill a 60-100% position available for a BE/BC adult or child/adolescent psychiatrist to provide high quality psychiatric care to University of Michigan undergraduate and graduate students. This position is a 12-month permanent staff appointment starting August 1, 2024.
 

Responsibilities*

Clinical - 80%

  • Conduct routine and urgent outpatient psychiatric assessments
  • Provide ongoing medication management
  • Coordinate care with local inpatient psychiatric units, psychiatric emergency rooms, and local treatment providers
  • Order or execute various tests and analyses to provide information on patient's condition
  • Effectively counsel patients on lifestyle modifications relevant to prevention of disease
  • Analyze reports, findings of tests and examinations to diagnose conditions and then effectively communicate this information to patients
  • Administer and prescribe a spectrum of treatments, including, but not limited to psychopharmacology
  • Provide guidance, counseling, and management for a variety of complex adjustment and mental health problems and, when applicable, refer patients to other medical or mental health specialists, or Student Life partners who can provide support services
  • Participate in the management of on-site mental health emergency procedures
  • Extend the knowledge of clinicians at UHS by providing consultation service for complex patients
  • Maintain compliance with billing and coding practices

Administrative - 20%

  • Attend monthly staff meetings
  • Indirect patient care via the patient portal and phone calls
  • Train and supervise psychiatric resident(s) in the UM Department of Psychiatry training program (0-5%)

Position Criteria:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must establish and maintain positive working relationships with a range of colleagues, patients, families
  • Skills working cooperatively as a member of a multidisciplinary staff
  • Expertise in conducting psychiatric evaluations and ongoing pharmacological treatment with a college age population
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation M.D./D.O. from an accredited medical school
  • Full, unrestricted license (or license-eligible) as a physician in the State of Michigan
  • Board certified or board-eligible for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
  • Possession of a State and Federal Narcotics and Controlled Substance license

Actual salary commensurate with education, experience and equity factors.

Working Conditions

  • Work hours coinciding with hours UHC is open (Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm). This position is hybrid and offers some flexibility for remote work. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually (at a minimum) and are subject to change depending on the business needs of the department.
  • Location: University Health Service (207 Fletcher St, Ann Arbor 48109).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work flexibly in multiple office and clinical settings, sometimes performing sedentary work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to navigate central campus, north campus and Michigan Medicine for site visits and meetings

Additional Information

  • The opportunity for an adjunct position with the UM Department of Psychiatry; UHC may be able to support a personal leave or a reduced clinical effort from June-August depending on interest and credentials.
