Course Description

LSA will be hiring one GSSA for 50% appointments (20 hours/week) for Fall 2024-Winter 2025. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2024.

Responsibilities*

Interested applicants can frame their cover letters to focus on their interest in the position listed below. The GSSA will work in LSA under the direct supervision of Jessica Garcia, DEI Manager.

The following responsibilities focus on the continued implementation of LSA's DEI 2.0 strategic plan.  Working in LSA, we are looking to hire one GSSA to:

  • Collaborate with a committee in the facilitation and assessment of the LSA DEI Staff Certificate, a strategic objective in LSA?s DEI 2.0 plan.
  • Assist in data analysis, metric assessment, and management of data of college-wide and unit-level DEI strategic goals as outlined in LSA?s DEI 2.0 plan.
  • Participate in the development of survey instruments and focus group questions, and co-lead focus groups to identify areas of progress, opportunities, and gaps in the implementation process of LSA?s DEI 2.0 plan.
  • Serve as a resource across divisions and units in the planning process of DEI strategic goals as outlined in LSA?s DEI 2.0 plan.
  • Assist with writing and/or editing pieces of reports.
  • Support the development and logistics of DEI programming and day-of event support.
  • Attend LSA DEI-related meetings that focus on cross-college collaboration to develop and strengthen DEI efforts that impact students, faculty, and staff.

Required Qualifications*

  • Applicants must be currently registered in a University of Michigan graduate program.
  • The work described above for this position must be considered academically relevant by the department or degree program in which the student is enrolled.
  • Demonstrated commitment in DEI through scholarship, teaching, service, and community involvement.
  • Experience in planning, facilitating, and participating in workshops and events.
  • Interest in issues of student development, leadership development, and diversity issues in higher education.
  • Demonstrated competency with modern computer productivity tools including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation programs.

Desired Qualifications*

In addition to the required qualifications listed above, successful candidates will have:

  • The ability to work, problem solve, and make decisions with limited supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize, work under pressure to meet deadlines, pay attention to detail, and reliably follow through on tasks. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work and communicate effectively and professionally with the University community as well as external constituents.
  • Ability to assist with data collection and analysis, especially for quantitative data
  • Project management experience.
  • Previous experience developing resource materials and agendas.
  • Some flexibility of scheduled work hours, including evenings or weekends.
  • LSA student enrolled in a graduate program

Decision Making Process

A finalist candidate will be asked to commit to remaining active as a GSSA for this role throughout the full academic year. If there is any reason why a candidate anticipates being unable to meet the full commitments of this role, we ask that it be communicated in advance of accepting the position. An inability to materially meet the commitments of this role (i.e., to remain employed and participating for the full academic year) substantially impacts the success of our DEI programming at LSA. We are, and will continue to be, flexible about the reasonable needs of any member of the team. 

Selection Process

For the selected candidate only, we will ask for a letter or email from your academic advisor confirming that you are in good academic standing not on fellowship support for the term of the appointment, are approved for a 50% appointment and that this position is academically relevant to your degree program.
