Responsibilities*

The Patient Service Associate will greet and arrive patients at the Kellogg Eye Center. Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • To provide patient check-in and family support 
  • Patient check-in, greet patient, confirm appointment time/procedure/location of procedures. Arrive patient in MiChart, verify patient has a driver.
  • Generate appropriate patient paperwork.
  • Triage incoming phone calls from main phone line.
  • Provide status information to patient’s friend/family member.
  • Breakdown prior day charts and route contents per established process.
  • Create shadow charts for OR per respective guidelines.
  • Receive and distribute incoming mail.
  • Assist in patient discharge as necessary.
  • Assist in making patient follow-up appointments at time of discharge.
  • Make photo copies.
  • Collect cash or process credit card transactions as needed.
  • Obtain insurance authorization as needed.
  • Assist nurses in contacting patients regarding schedule changes as required.
  • Stock break room and conference room supplies as needed.
  • Distribute OR schedule (next day).
  • Empty blue paper recycling bins.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned. 
  • Other Duties as assigned
  • This position will assist other perioperative locations on a periodic basis to help cover staffing shortages

Required Qualifications*

  • High School Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Recent, within the past two (2) years of clerical experience necessary, preferably in a medical setting. 
  • Demonstrated competence in computer software applications and medical terminology. 
  • Must be able to manage multiple requests at one time while maintaining composure.   
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team 
  • Excellent attendance record required 
  • Cadence scheduling/MiChart experience is preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work well within a team setting.
  • Demonstrates active listening, written, verbal and information technology skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience in a health care setting
  • Experience in an ophthalmic setting
  • Experience with MS Word and MS Excel

Work Schedule

  • 40 hours
  • 7a - 4:30p shift 
  • Will need to travel to our other perioperative locations when help is needed.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
