Summary

As the Circulation and Access Services Supervisor you will coordinate library services to meet the informational, educational, and research-related needs of library users. You will assist staff in answering requests for information and search references. You will set student and regular employee desk schedules, plan and direct their work, evaluate their job performances, handle staff complaints or grievances, and discipline staff. You will report to the Hatcher/Shapiro Library Daytime and Weekend Manager.

What You'll Do

  • Direct and supervise Circulation and Access Services staff working within their department during their assigned shifts, including coordinating desk coverage if a gap appears (this may include calling on predetermined staff from other units).
  • Provide support to student and staff employees at service points by communicating and enforcing library policies; communicate and escalate issues to the department manager.
  • Conduct user and item record maintenance, course reserves and physical material processing, building space reservations, checking out and checking in of physical material, and shelving material.
  • Supervise the opening and closing of the relevant library or service points.
  • Collaborate with Library Facilities, U-M Department of Public Safety, and U-M Plant Operations to handle and report security and building maintenance incidents.
  • Handle basic printer, computer, and copier troubleshooting; and report technology issues.
  • Participate in the work of the wider Operations division, and meet with other Operations supervisors and managers to coordinate and communicate library procedures.

Required Qualifications*

  • 1+ years of experience with customer service
  • Experience training employees
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and anti-racism and working to advance a workplace culture that strives to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias

Desired Qualifications*

  • Working knowledge of Library of Congress call number system
  • Previous supervisory experience

Additional Information

The work schedule for this position is Tuesday - Thursday 8am - 5pm; Friday - Saturday 9am - 6pm. This position performs work onsite.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • The person in this position occasionally moves through the building and ascends/descends short flights of stairs to different floors of the building as part of their duties.
  • May need to be able to move and/or transport materials weighing up to 25 pounds occasionally.
