Summary

The Section of General Surgery at Michigan Medicine is seeking a qualified Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our team. The PAs and NPs support the faculty and resident general surgery teams to provide patient care for adult trauma and general surgery patients, and adult and pediatric burn patients. This is a great opportunity for motivated professionals to provide patient care through diagnosis and treatment of surgical patients across a broad spectrum within Michigan Medicine.

Responsibilities*

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) will participate in all aspects of initial and subsequent surgical care for patients across the Health System. They may also assist with initial trauma resuscitation and clinical coverage of the Trauma Burn ICU. This position will also offer the opportunity to collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and residents in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives. These job duties may be modified depending on the needs of the Section of General Surgery.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  •          Evaluation and treatment of patients in need of surgical care, including initial consultations
  •          Recommend and interpret diagnostic tests
  •          Perform minor bedside procedures (laceration repair, incision and drainage)
  •          Insertion, maintenance, troubleshooting, and removal of nasogastric tubes, chest tubes and surgical drains
  •          Procedures typically encountered in the acute trauma and critical care settings (chest tube insertion, arterial line insertion, central line insertion, bronchoscopy)
  •          Maintain complete documentation of patient care
  •          Write admission orders and provide handoff for patients admitted to a surgical service
  •          Order and prescribe medications in accordance with statutes, rules and regulations of the State of Michigan
  •          Educate and counsel patient and family members on disease pathophysiology, management, and trajectory
  •          Manage peri-procedural risk assessments and medication management recommendations for all procedures and surgeries
  •          Participate in educational activities of the Section of General Surgery

Required Qualifications*

Required Qualifications (PA):

  •         Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  •         Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  •         Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan

Required Qualifications (NP):

  •         Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  •         Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan.

Required Qualifications for both PA and NP candidates:

  •          BLS certification
  •          ACLS certification
  •          NPI registration
  •          DEA registration
  •          ATLS certification
  •          State of Michigan Controlled Substance license
  •          Three or more years clinical experience as an APP

NOTE: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Desired Qualifications*

  •           Five or more years of general surgery experience as an APP in an inpatient setting
  •          Experience working with colorectal surgery patients as an APP
  •          Experience working with burn patients as an APP
  •          Experience with surgical critical care as an APP
  •          Demonstrated success working with combined resident-APP teams in an academic setting
  •          Competence with procedures typically encountered in the acute trauma and critical care settings (chest tube insertion, arterial line insertion, central line insertion, bronchoscopy)
  •          Demonstrated experience with coordinating and managing complex patients and providing safe handoffs to the next provider
  •          Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team
  •          Excellent oral and written communication skills
  •          Demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment

Work Schedule

Hours: 40hrs per week
Shifts: APPs are scheduled in support of a 24/7 staffing model.  Individual shifts will not exceed 13 hours in length.
 

*There will be shift premium for evening and weekend shifts

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
