Responsibilities*

  • Operate slide scanning instruments, including:
  • Receive and reconcile specimens for order entry, including rejection of specimens (when applicable).
  • Perform order entry of specimens into the laboratory information system.
  • Perform problem solving of specimens, including extensive phone triage.
  • Maintain QC logs for problem cases.
  • Prepare cases for grossing/make cassettes.
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance for lab instrumentation, including maintaining equipment maintenance records.
  • Maintain an inventory of chemicals used in the laboratory, including maintaining a manifest, and appropriate storage and labeling.
  • File department assets as needed.
  • Package specimens and slides for transport.
  • Track assets in Pathology tracking system.
  • Manage biohazard and chemical waste, including collection and proper disposal.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of the other employees as requested.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • High school degree in related field or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • One or more years college instruction or Associates degree or equivalent experience with exposure to biology, anatomy and physiology, or other laboratory related field.
  • Demonstrated confidence and ability with computers and software.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Willing to work in a growing and rapidly changing environment.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks under occasional high work volumes without sacrificing accuracy.

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is on the evening shift and will include rotating weekends and holidays with other staff.  Additionally, in the event of staff shortages, emergent events, or due to project timelines mandatory overtime may be required to be worked on other shifts, staff may be contacted to work without notice.

Union Affiliation

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
