Summary

Two positions currently available.  Schedule varies depending on position.  Weekends may be required.  Weekend shifts are eligible for shift premium pay.

Functioning as a member of the Child & Family Life team, the Child Life Assistant (CLA) staff member is responsible for the daily operation and supervision of Activity Centers.  In addition, the CLA will provide bedside/chairside play experiences as directed.  They will support patients and siblings by providing developmentally appropriate play/recreation and activities within the parameters of the program. In addition, they will provide direction to Child & Family Life work-study students and hospital volunteers; maintain a safe play/activity environment.

Responsibilities*

  • Plan and implement daily activities
  • Facilitate individual and group play opportunities for patients and siblings
  • Advertise daily programming in appropriate venues
  • Recruit and screen activity center participants
  • Transport patients to playroom and /or special events
  • Maintain a safe and clean play environment, including making appropriate assessments of patient and sibling behavior while in program
  • Provide direction to Child & Family Life hospital volunteers
  • Communicate with parents/caregivers regarding behavior issues of activity center participants
  • Assess play and recreation needs for children of varying developmental  stages and temperaments
  • Assist with ordering supplies
  • Function independently without direct supervision
  • Use appropriate judgement to ensure safety of activity center participants

Required Qualifications*

  • Associates degree in related field and/or a combination of education and experience
  • Prior work experience with healthy children in a group setting (daycare, day camp, preschool, school, etc.)
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills, including problem solving and collaboration
  • Ability to transport patients to and from activity centers.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and organized play space.  Including but not limited to, restocking playroom equipment and supplies, cleaning and arranging furniture

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or working towards a bachelor's degree in a related field of study such as Education, Psychology, Child Development, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, or Child Life Specialist
  • A minimum of 1-year of experience working with children preferred
  • Work experience with children in healthcare environment is preferred

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
