Summary

As a premier, research-intensive academic medical center, the University of Michigan Medical School is world renowned with over $600 million in external research funding. The Department of Anesthesiology is among the top-ranked NIH funded departments in the nation, with research outputs comprising the full range of the translational science spectrum.

The Department of Anesthesiology intends to hire a Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research Assistant (QRA). The QRA will lead and contribute to qualitative and mixed methods research for ongoing and emerging research projects directed by University of Michigan Anesthesiology faculty, who lead the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) for which University of Michigan serves as the coordinating center (https://mpog.org/).

MPOG is a consortium of over 70 hospitals that seeks to improve perioperative patient care, through research, quality improvement, and education initiatives founded upon electronic health record (EHR) and clinical registry data. Our multidisciplinary Michigan-based team includes anesthesiologists, nurses, data scientists, computer programmers, project managers, epidemiologists and statisticians. We work closely with collaborators at anesthesiology departments across the country to develop policies, procedures, and the technical infrastructure required to conduct large-scale research, create quality improvement initiatives, educate caregivers, and guide healthcare administration.

The ideal candidate will possess the skills needed to contextualize the University of Michigan Anesthesiology and existing MPOG quantitative health record data, with new qualitative data, collected and synthesized via semi-structured interviews and surveys with clinicians across MPOG centers. Combining quantitative and qualitative data via mixed methods approaches will enable deeper insights to inform and improve perioperative care. The QRA will work on grant-funded and other faculty-driven University of Michigan Anesthesiology Department projects.
