Summary

The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization (MC2) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Area Specialist Lead in the field of spectroscopic characterization. This is a full-time position responsible for providing technical and scientific support to faculty, researchers, and students in the MC2.

Responsibilities*

  • Lead the spectroscopy characterization research area, including oversight of daily operations, maintenance of equipment, and training of users
  • Provide consultation, training, and technical support to researchers on the use of XPS, and Raman for materials characterization, as well as initial training for introductory SEM users
  • Develop and implement new techniques and protocols to promote research in the field of materials science
  • Collaborate with faculty and researchers to design and execute experiments and analyze data
  • Communicate research findings through presentations and publications
  • Participate in the development of grant proposals and provide input on budgetary and resource needs
  • Up to 20% of your full-time effort can be on research projects in collaboration with UM faculty and/or industry / other external sponsors
     

Required Qualifications*

  • PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field with a strong focus on surface analytics
  • At least 3 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of Raman and XPS equipment and data analysis
  • Proficiency in image processing and analysis software
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with researchers and students from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with additional materials characterization techniques such as SEM, FIB, or TEM
  • Experience with grant proposal development and budget management
  • Experience in a leadership role

Work Locations

The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. You will be classified as an ON-SITE position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus at least 4 days per week and working remotely the balance of your time.
