Summary
The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization (MC2) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Area Specialist Lead in the field of spectroscopic characterization. This is a full-time position responsible for providing technical and scientific support to faculty, researchers, and students in the MC2.
Responsibilities*
- Lead the spectroscopy characterization research area, including oversight of daily operations, maintenance of equipment, and training of users
- Provide consultation, training, and technical support to researchers on the use of XPS, and Raman for materials characterization, as well as initial training for introductory SEM users
- Develop and implement new techniques and protocols to promote research in the field of materials science
- Collaborate with faculty and researchers to design and execute experiments and analyze data
- Communicate research findings through presentations and publications
- Participate in the development of grant proposals and provide input on budgetary and resource needs
- Up to 20% of your full-time effort can be on research projects in collaboration with UM faculty and/or industry / other external sponsors
Required Qualifications*
- PhD in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field with a strong focus on surface analytics
- At least 3 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of Raman and XPS equipment and data analysis
- Proficiency in image processing and analysis software
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with researchers and students from diverse backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with additional materials characterization techniques such as SEM, FIB, or TEM
- Experience with grant proposal development and budget management
- Experience in a leadership role
Work Locations
The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. You will be classified as an ON-SITE position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus at least 4 days per week and working remotely the balance of your time.
